SOOM - Джєбарс (Robustfellow)

Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need for slow, hellish music. Sometimes, I just want to hear something that is viciously callous and devastating. Thankfully, noise-terrorists SOOM recently released their second album Джєбарс, to be honest I expect a lot from this

Chief of the Robustfellow label gave me this tape for review. I must say, I was really surprised with its looks and design. This is some truly nerdy stuff; the colors, the form, the way the whole hardcover connected - it's really something. All polygraphy was made in Ukraine but the tapes were made and recorded in the UK. The quality of this sound just paralyzed me, haha! To be honest, I've seen SOOM live about 5 times and and they touched me only once, at the really first time with old line up, that was a show in small dirty bar, but the atmosphere and sound were amazing. Unfortunately all next times when I saw them, they had no effect on me. But I really dig their first album and hopefully “Джєбарс” is cool too…

This albums begins with long, heavy and slow intro… the whole first song is just an intro. “Вщент” is the first thing with real riffs and suffocating sound. I do not know how this tape was recorded (maybe it was done with some help from demons or something) but it sounds monstrous - my speakers go crazy with all these vibrations. SOOM produce low hypnotic tunes that could scare you. This pleasant heaviness slowly envelops you and than crushes you. Most of these songs are full of classical sludge/doom/drone elements. But that doesn't mean that this noise is a clone of famous bands. These dope-smokers have their own way, with their own specific tunes and theme of ancient magical molphars (it's something like pagan wizards). I also found a lot of noise and psychedelic experiments on this piece, guys didn`t limit themselves in music creation and that is very best.

“Джєбарс” is that mix of confusion and joy that comes from saying, "What on earth is this?" then moving to "Whatever this is, it rules!"

Krupskaya - Dawn of Shattered Silence

Many Grind fans will say that the genre can come in two flavors. First - humoristic, goofy and silly. Second - extremely fast brutal and technical. British Grinders Krupskaya belong to the second kind of grind. These maniacs are really talented and fast, but they do not sound like aNapalm Death or Terrorizer copy, they found their own way in this music. So this piece of noise is not really an album and I will explain to you why. All the songs were released previously, the guys just re-recorded them and changed some parts in them. Also there is a lovely bonus - live recordinbg. “Dawn of Shattered Silence” was released before their insane Russia tour, and the guys ended their tour in Siberia (fuck!). The noise is hidden behind a very dark and impressive cover. This drawing was made by Krupskayas drummer Edgar. Gloomy colors, cracks, owl eyes and many other elements… this art is really deep and amazing. Needless to say that his style is recognizable and it really displays the music of his band. So like the visual side, the music of these British guys is easily recognizable as well. Machine Gun drumming is the very first thing that I noticed when I heard this band the first time. High screaming vocals, and the swarming guitar and bass riffs are crazy too. But now everything above has become even faster, they've certainly improved their skills. I can call “Dawn of Shattered Silence” a very technical piece of work. Hard to believe but among that brutality I found a real melody, like in “Contaminated Dead Atmosphere”. As for the live bonus I found it pretty messy but, interesting. The vocal are cluttered with the guitar and drums which is unusual for live recording. But this is just a bonus, so it's okay. Chepang - Barriga De Verme

Before we get started with the review of this release, I think it's really important that we talk about Chepang as a group first. Chepang is definitely one of the more interesting (if not the most, if we're honest) grindcore bands out there at the moment. What really captures most people's attention is the fact that they use two drummers. It's pretty fucking insane to see two maniacs blasting at the same time and to do it perfectly; unfortunately, this is where most people's understanding of the group stops. Yeah, it's goddamn impressive to have more drummers than guitar players in a band, but I find the most interesting part of Chepang to be that it's not really a band... it's really a collective of musicians that rotate in and out of playing. Because of this, Chepang has presented themselves in many ways - as a 3 piece, 4 piece, 5 piece; so on and so forth. The collective whole of Chepang is what makes BARRIGA DE VERME really interesting; 12 different musicians are present on this recording. 3 guitar players, 1 WARR guitar, 2 people on noise, an organ, 3 drummers, and 2 vocalists (4 if you count the guys on double-duty). Even more interesting to me is the whole philosophy that went into this record - "Choosing an extreme path but without interfering with anyone. Absolute chaos but in harmony. This was the main idea we imagined when we decided to do this project. Challenge here was not to be technically proficient and create a masterpiece but to liberate your mind and be yourself." And damn, did they stick to that. But we'll get to that in a sec - let's talk about the physical record itself. I was able to snag a copy of this limited run of 100, printed on 180 gram black vinyl. I love the art too - it's simple in the sense that it's just piles and piles of maggots and a face, but when you take a good look at it, there are hundreds of them on either side of the record, and it's a really cool piece to look at. There are no frills - no track lists, no credits - no nothing. Just...maggots. Inside there's a liner that has some additional artwork on it as well as the credits and the message and such. So after the record stopped spinning, I had one thought - "What the fuck did I just listen to?". But, this is not a negative reaction. I was truly kind of confused, but also totally blown away. These guys really took their mission (that I note above) and went for it. The record starts out with a solid 5 mintues or so of noise until the drums kick in, and when they do, things start getting crazy. It becomes a chaotic mess of noise and drums, and once that picks up, it doesn't stop until we're greeted with an acoustic guitar track that breaks everything up. It's a peaceful sounding track, which is definitely necessary for what happens next. Following this track, we get a nearly 20 minute long track of absolute fucking chaos. Once the blast kicks in, it's total mayhem until the end. There's ripping guitars, all kinds of crazy vocals, insane drumming - it's an absolute mindfuck. Listen - I love this record. I find it to be really innovative and unique, as well as being a pinnacle of of what grindcore should be - true self expresssion without giving a fuck about music theory or other peoples expectations. They took a concept and ran with it, and they executed it flawlessly. Do yourself a favor and go listen to this. There's a reason Chepang exploded, and I truly hope they keep innovating. Psudoku - Deep Space Psudokument (Selfmadegod Records)

Psudoku is one of those extraordinary bands which are hard to understand, and if they have not hooked you from the first time, then it is unlikely that in the future you will return to them. This noise is so hot and spicy... it's the audio version of really bad drug tip, when your brain turns inside out. Listening to this, there is a lot of confusion (positive confusions of course) to be felt, mostly due to the obviously unstructured music, but also due to so little conceptual presence that this album has. It's very hard to explain to yourself what is this all about and it even harder to explain this music to normal people, ha! There are a ton of riffs that are written in the riff-break-riff formula, the changes are so constant and unexpected and the performance so fucking frantic! Guitar screams as loudly as possible! Besides the crazy guitar, I want to highlight work of the drummer... there are so many rhythm changes and the beats are so fast, holy shit! I left the main element for the end. The keyboard makes the main atmosphere on this album. All crazy, distorted space sounds was made by this instrument. There is so much work behind this album and it really impressive! My ears and mind is still hurting after listening “Deep Space Psudokument”, haha!

Boys and girls, if you want to be destroyed, go ahead and grab this album. But remember that you were warned about its craziness!

Ona Snop / Chinsniffer

Attention hardcore freaks! This noise will melt your mind! This double attack from UK became a very pleasant and positive surprise for me. The noise inside is unusual and very crazy, the effect of these tunes can be compared to strong hallucinogenic drugs, haha! Just look at the cover and you will understand what I'm talking about. The image reminds me of some classic pieces by Salvador Dali. The artist who had drawn this was surely not sober and mad, haha! This short story begins with 4 songs of Ona Snop. The shy guys from Leeds managed to kick my ass with really punchy music, haha! From the very beginning (with Working Alcoholic) everything accelerates to a critical and dangerous speed. Ona Snop used different approaches which made their music very strange and nice. You will find the fast tempos of fastcore, swinging and catchy moments of hardcore, ugly and hysterical yelling of powerviolence. And these ingredients are covered with strong sound of guitar, drums and bass guitar. Hail to ferocity! Liverpool maniacs are the next in line. Well when I heard these 2 songs the first time I thought my mind had collapsed. I was asking myself “what the hell was that?!”, haha!) Chinsniffer is a really weird mix of hardcore/free jazz (?)/punk/noise and grindcore. Everything revolves in a chaotic manner with slow/fast tempos. In my opinion this music stands out. Not the greatest bass sound or fast drums, the main thing here is the crazy sounding saxophone and keyboards in the background. Chinsniffer - highly concentrated insanity of Great Britain! Rating: Ona Snop 8/10 Chinsniffer 8.5/10

Wojczech / Krupskaya

There is a strange thing with this split. I looked at this image a lot of times, but my brain refused to define this picture as cover art for grindcore release, haha! First what I thought was “oh boy this is, probably a new SunO))) album”, but I didn't find the right logo. Indeed, this piece of art is pretty unusual for most grindcore acts, but if you check out the discography of Krupskaya you will find a strong visual connection with their previous works. Edgar Tumpkin (the drummer of Krupskaya) is in charge of all this dark madness. I must say he did a great job for this German vs UK split. Germans are the first who start the noise… Wojczech is an old and well known band (especially in Europe), they started more than 20 year ago (fantastic isn't it?). Well I noticed one strange thing with these songs. All of them were recorded 8 years ago, and they were used for this, lovely black vinyl. All 3 songs are damn good. These Germans poured Sludge, Metal and some Punk elements into a huge Grindcore base. I must admit, the mix sounds pretty nasty and tasty. Loud blast beats, good vocal line, song structures are pretty simple (but they could kill). The bass is loud and follows the guitars riffs and even has a few good stand-outs. Also there is small drop of sad tunes in the last bullet “Stunde Des Wolfes”, and this song has more metal taste, but i like it. Krupskaya is a very specific band from the UK. These guys really found their own way in noise. Truly fast aggression is mixing with slow melanholik parts… Sharp guitar sound with good tone and buzzing bass are blended with high screaming vocal and blasting drums. That sound mess is totally sick, even schizophrenic, but at the same time impressive. This band has one more feature - the deep atmosphere, just check the last track “Frozen Bodies Against The Wire” and you will understand what I mean. All noisey,chaotic, avant-garde tunes and crazy broken tempos in these songs make Krupskaya stand out from the average Grind band. Rating: 8/10 Krupskaya Wojczech

Derbe Lebowski - S/T (Dead Heroes Records)

This band can`t be tagged as some classic or old school Grind or Powerviolence. These dudes love to experiment, that's why it's hard to set them in usual music category. So what is Derbe Lebowski and why are they seem unusual to me… Let me start from the history note. This weird name first appeared in Germany somewhere in 2011. Everything started pretty usual, some friends came together with a strong desire to play something heavy. 1 Year later they released their first work “Remove Your Mask”. Back then Derbe Lebowski sounded more like Powerviolence, but with time these guys mutated and changed into something more unique and crazier. The visual side of this album is extremely interesting. The artwork literally blew my mind and sucked me in. In my mind the images remind me of works by such artists as Hans Ruedi Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. This magical creature, all these elements (especially connected human bodies), each touch of the pencil and brush, it causes goose bumps. I haven't seen such dark, psychedelic art in awhile, it's honestly gorgeous. This album is short, there are only 9 songs and all of them are set on one side of this obsidian black vinyl. Let's put the needle on the first track “Moloch”. This is the first song and it stands out with chaotic riffs and powerful clean sound. Honestly I`m not a fan of breakdowns, but here that trick sounds cool. I like the transformations in each song, slow heavy parts give way fast crusty hardcore shots, yes that is not “old school” but it still sounds good. Also this self titled lp is a nice mix of some more traditional powerviolence aspects with modern metalic hardcore + some small sludge/grindcore moments. I like the fact that the boys did not renounce themselves from Old good Punk. I've caught remains of that nasty spirit within this noise, and that was a nice surprise for me. PS: In case you want to know, Derbe Lebowski is dedicating all of their to social problems, themes which are around us. All the lyrics can be found in the insert inside this badass looking sleeve. Antigama - The Insolent (Selfmadegod)

Antigama is a band who certainly stands out in grind scene. Their focus are more on the technical side of things, and lesser on punk aspects. I believe thats why this group is not for everyone, and even less for everyday listening. Antigama really glorifies their home country of Poland. (how many other famous extreme bands can you name from PL who does that?), I don't have any idea, if Polish people really gives a fuck about that, haha!). The Insolent is Antigamas 7th album in their discography, and makes a nice impression. The whole design is a projection of Antigamas music. It's elegant, progressive, atmospheric and crazy.Even schizophrenic at times too! The cover is artistically well thought out also, using those pale colors, and really amazing desert photos, plus the idea with these eyes is also pretty catchy.

This is a huge album on so many levels. While taking root in chaotic grind and metal, it merges into a mad mix of technicality and ferocity. Not even once do they let up, and give you time to breathe, or think about the musical aspects, before the record is over, and youre looking at the CD player, wondering what the hell just happened here. This album is loaded with wonderful, and strange riffs, which pops up during the chaotic pace of the songs. I especially enjoy the tiny pieces of free jazz elements, that makes this sound even weirder. The Vocalist screams so hard and wild, while the drummer kicks fast and so powerful. Our guys here literally spills out all the negative energi and frustration they got...  

If you’re at all into technical music, buy this record. You might not listen to it that often, but you will certainly be blown away by what you hear, and anyone who is a fan of strange, progressive experimental grind, should definetely get their hands on this.
