Krupskaya - Dawn of Shattered Silence

Many Grind fans will say that the genre can come in two flavors. First - humoristic, goofy and silly. Second - extremely fast brutal and technical. British Grinders Krupskaya belong to the second kind of grind. These maniacs are really talented and fast, but they do not sound like aNapalm Death or Terrorizer copy, they found their own way in this music. So this piece of noise is not really an album and I will explain to you why. All the songs were released previously, the guys just re-recorded them and changed some parts in them. Also there is a lovely bonus - live recordinbg. “Dawn of Shattered Silence” was released before their insane Russia tour, and the guys ended their tour in Siberia (fuck!). The noise is hidden behind a very dark and impressive cover. This drawing was made by Krupskayas drummer Edgar. Gloomy colors, cracks, owl eyes and many other elements… this art is really deep and amazing. Needless to say that his style is recognizable and it really displays the music of his band. So like the visual side, the music of these British guys is easily recognizable as well. Machine Gun drumming is the very first thing that I noticed when I heard this band the first time. High screaming vocals, and the swarming guitar and bass riffs are crazy too. But now everything above has become even faster, they've certainly improved their skills. I can call “Dawn of Shattered Silence” a very technical piece of work. Hard to believe but among that brutality I found a real melody, like in “Contaminated Dead Atmosphere”. As for the live bonus I found it pretty messy but, interesting. The vocal are cluttered with the guitar and drums which is unusual for live recording. But this is just a bonus, so it's okay. Wojczech / Krupskaya

There is a strange thing with this split. I looked at this image a lot of times, but my brain refused to define this picture as cover art for grindcore release, haha! First what I thought was “oh boy this is, probably a new SunO))) album”, but I didn't find the right logo. Indeed, this piece of art is pretty unusual for most grindcore acts, but if you check out the discography of Krupskaya you will find a strong visual connection with their previous works. Edgar Tumpkin (the drummer of Krupskaya) is in charge of all this dark madness. I must say he did a great job for this German vs UK split. Germans are the first who start the noise… Wojczech is an old and well known band (especially in Europe), they started more than 20 year ago (fantastic isn't it?). Well I noticed one strange thing with these songs. All of them were recorded 8 years ago, and they were used for this, lovely black vinyl. All 3 songs are damn good. These Germans poured Sludge, Metal and some Punk elements into a huge Grindcore base. I must admit, the mix sounds pretty nasty and tasty. Loud blast beats, good vocal line, song structures are pretty simple (but they could kill). The bass is loud and follows the guitars riffs and even has a few good stand-outs. Also there is small drop of sad tunes in the last bullet “Stunde Des Wolfes”, and this song has more metal taste, but i like it. Krupskaya is a very specific band from the UK. These guys really found their own way in noise. Truly fast aggression is mixing with slow melanholik parts… Sharp guitar sound with good tone and buzzing bass are blended with high screaming vocal and blasting drums. That sound mess is totally sick, even schizophrenic, but at the same time impressive. This band has one more feature - the deep atmosphere, just check the last track “Frozen Bodies Against The Wire” and you will understand what I mean. All noisey,chaotic, avant-garde tunes and crazy broken tempos in these songs make Krupskaya stand out from the average Grind band. Rating: 8/10 Krupskaya Wojczech

Riley: Besides a short stint across the UK with my old band some twelve years ago, I’ve never actually been on tour, so it’s a bit of a strange mix between excitement and nerves at the moment.

Matt: To be honest, there's been a few details of the tour that have caused a bit more stress than usual. But now everything’s sorted and it’s just around the corner, I can't wait to start... fresh pants have been the least of our worries!

Ed: None of my pants are fresh.

Krupskaya / Foible Instinct (7 Degrees Records)

This beautiful (at first look) split is very meaningful for both bands. Both bands are celebrating pretty respectful anniversary of 10 years of cooperative work since they have started making their own glory and concerts on stages of different countries. One of the strongest sides for this split it’s a design that has a very high quality and beauty, this vinyl makes a real pleasure to hold it in
hands. Also this release reminds me a coin and as you may know, coin always has 2 sides. The same as this split that has its’ own side of this vinyl, it's a separate branch of grindcore genre. The Foible Instinct (from Kyiv) make more classic genre of grindcore music, however an English band from Krupskaya has more crazy style... those guys play chaotic and insane grindcore with a pretty complex and wild rhythms.

In some measure I hold in my hands a small piece of history; it's the last F.I. record. The last because these guys changed their lineup, were re-named, and now they play a little bit different kind of grindcore. The last five songs were recorded on same small (but nice and lovely) stage of Evergreen studio... I can't say that I heard here something new for myself but from the other side it’s good because guys don't change their old way of making music. As before, these guys were paying a middle tempo harsh grindcore and they do it well until now. Pleasantly, I was pleased with the presence of the second vocal that make also a nice sound. The bad side is that I can distinguish only the guitar sound it’s seemed for me a bit deflating and dry.

Krupskaya is a complete opposite to Ukrainians. Their hellish sound can make your ears bleed, hahah! Such musical perversion is very popular in Albion; this small island contains a solid concentration such as in crazy bands. The broken rhythms, blotches of different genres, chaos in songs and also high scream from Alex – all this will notably spoil your eardrums. But among this cruel violence you can catch (hear) some melodic pieces that makes this record even more insane.

Sandokhan / Krupskaya (7 Degrees Records)

I love when splits have completely different bands (different in their sound and style) it makes such releases more interesting and varied. Split LP Sandokhan / Krupskaya is a good example. From one side we get german simplicity and perseverance and on the other hand mad english sight on grindcore. In addition to the highlights in the stylistic diversity this split also good with its look. The cover reminds me those test pictures in psychologist office, where they show some blurred image ask thatwhat you see there. Silver painted logos look very neat and nice (I would even say that this is not typical for a grindcore release). I had to ask around a bit about Sandokan, because I haven't found any info about that band in the internet. It seems that someone from Keitzer band is playing there... And this band is a really good example a german metal grindcore. Great speed, nice sound and most importantly simplicity. Sandokhan like the old german tank, they are not ultrafast but that does not prevent them from destroying everything around. And even if there is nothing special for me in this band, I was very pleased to listen to their side of the split.
Well now we turn our plate to B side. Hm... if early Krupskaya`s material and it's certainly does not have such a concentrated musical madness as the latter stuff, but in those songs you can find many interesting things. The most important thing that there is an indispensable feature of those british namely chaotic and broken rhythms. But on this record guys play not only fast material, here you can dig some slow pieces sometimes they resemble bizarre and acid doom. Just listen “Contaminated Dead Atmosphere” and you will understand what I`m talking about.

Krupskaya - Symbiosis Through Decay (Ignore This Records)

This seven-inch was waiting for its moment for a long time. I could not find the right words that would describe this madness, and I must say I feel very sorry for that. "Symbiosis Through Decay" was released quite a while ago, but as for me it will never loose its relevance and its specificity. Krupskaya is the band that is completely insane even if you put it in one row with other wild collectives of Great Britain.
A very strict and dark art. All in dark colors. Looking at this piece of plastic and paper, I could not help thinking that this is a release of some doom band. In their psycho music they use set of extreme trends such as sludge, mathcore, hardcore, grindcore, and, well, metal is also present here. This EP is filled with 10 completely deranged tracks. The sound is very scratchy, I can perfectly hear that everything was recorded digitally, and it is great, as analog recording (not to be confused with an analog media) would kill all the sharpness. Slow atmospheric pieces suddenly go ultra-fast, and vice versa... this like a blender that is making a fresh vegetable fresh, but you periodically stop it and see if it is ready or not :) Crazy and very specific vocals of Alex perfectly fit into the general cacophony of noise. While listening to these infernal sounds, I involuntarily draw sketches of an old tale of Alice in Wonderland in my head. But in a scene with tea party they whould have no tea, but something much stronger and hallucinogenic))
