The Grindful Dead - Black Goat Barbecue Bash Edition
Rip Roaring Shit Storm Records has sent me this tape twice (first parcel was lost), as they really wanted me to hear this noise.
Obviously, I can't refuse him. So, after some short research, I found out that The Grindful Dead is a Brazilian grindcore band with deep old school roots. This tape is a re-issue of their demo, but besides the old material, I found a lot of bonus materials. This fresh tape is limited to 50 pieces and has refreshed artwork. The strange thing is, both A and B sides are almost the same; the difference is only in the last tracks. It's a weird decision, what we have have here.
Black Goat Barbecue Bash Edition is done in the Brazilian way; it's heavy and primitive (best formula in my opinion). This noise is not unique; I found a massive/monstrous influence from Napalm Death in this music. Tempos, structure even guitar sound, everything has a taste of 90's grind. The bass is either turned way down, or buzzing guitars clutter it. The death growls are alright, nothing real special. The drums are loud, but there is only one problem with the drums. The snare and cymbals are not nearly juicy enough, perhaps that's because these Brazilian grinders wanted to copy old style in full 100%... Must say it was hard to listen this album to the end, somewhere in the middle of side A it started to be boring to me.
I bet that guys tried to create something close to their idols...well this album may be able to compete with Terrorizer and Napalm Death’s hooky grind, but with less of power, atmosphere and anger.

Expurgo - Deformed By Law
Expurgo is an old Grindcore band from Brazil.
“Deformed by Law” is their second full length album; in my opinion this work is
very serious. Everything was done in high quality, starting from the visual
part, sound and label promotion. This design is so soaked with the theme of
death; that is evident not only in pictures but also in colors. The artist made
a huge job of this cover art it looks very delicious, same with the back photo
of the mummy. It was very nice to find that inside this digipack, there is all
the text and band info (I guess it`s common, but it’s necessary part of each
album).
Deformed By Law is a good introduction to Expurgo (for those who don’t
know this name), because it’s self-contained and it’s got real Grind power. And
you know what? This work is catchy and heavy as hell. Yeah, that’s right.
Blasting angry madness that really sticks with you. The lead track “Silence” on
this CD, starts off with a slow a but, epic tune… that is preparing you for
painful punchy Grindcore. When I heard this album on bandcamp I was pleased
with its sound, but when I put the CD in my player I was even more ecstatic.
This dynamic sound could crush you, all of the instruments and screams are well
mastered. Bass is clearly there, which is lovely to hear for once, since most
of these bands don't have a bit of bass behind them. Roars and screams are loud
and they don't get cluttered among everything. The guitar tone is dangerous, it’s
not super low but it has great buzzing sound. Furious blasting is impressive,
so fast and intense, I really like it.
Fans of Grindcore would definitely dig
this; this band has proved again that they are badass with this album and on
the stage of Obscene Extreme.
