SOOM - Джєбарс (Robustfellow)

Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need for slow, hellish music. Sometimes, I just want to hear something that is viciously callous and devastating. Thankfully, noise-terrorists SOOM recently released their second album Джєбарс, to be honest I expect a lot from this
full length...
Chief of the Robustfellow label gave me this tape for review. I must say, I was really surprised with its looks and design. This is some truly nerdy stuff; the colors, the form, the way the whole hardcover connected - it's really something. All polygraphy was made in Ukraine but the tapes were made and recorded in the UK. The quality of this sound just paralyzed me, haha! To be honest, I've seen SOOM live about 5 times and and they touched me only once, at the really first time with old line up, that was a show in small dirty bar, but the atmosphere and sound were amazing. Unfortunately all next times when I saw them, they had no effect on me. But I really dig their first album and hopefully “Джєбарс” is cool too…

This albums begins with long, heavy and slow intro… the whole first song is just an intro. “Вщент” is the first thing with real riffs and suffocating sound. I do not know how this tape was recorded (maybe it was done with some help from demons or something) but it sounds monstrous - my speakers go crazy with all these vibrations. SOOM produce low hypnotic tunes that could scare you. This pleasant heaviness slowly envelops you and than crushes you. Most of these songs are full of classical sludge/doom/drone elements. But that doesn't mean that this noise is a clone of famous bands. These dope-smokers have their own way, with their own specific tunes and theme of ancient magical molphars (it's something like pagan wizards). I also found a lot of noise and psychedelic experiments on this piece, guys didn`t limit themselves in music creation and that is very best.

“Джєбарс” is that mix of confusion and joy that comes from saying, "What on earth is this?" then moving to "Whatever this is, it rules!"

Jesus Ain't In Poland ‎- No Man's Land (Grindpromotion Records)

I won't lie, news about the new album of Italian Grinders Jesus Ain't In Poland has surprised me a lot. Because I was sure that they were in deep and cold hiatus. But our friends were silently preparing a huge portion of noisey material. This hammering album contains 12 songs and more than 1 hour of noise! On this album, the guys tried something new, this massive album is not just pure Grindcore… No Man's Land consists of Grindcore, some Black metal tinges and an atmosphere of doom metal. Maybe some nerdy Grindheads will say “this sucks because it's not Grindcore, there a lot of metal stuff in here too”, but fuck them. Because this album definitely works and it's huge in many ways. The first time I heard No Man's Land I was pinned down to the wall. By the time it was over my mind had melted. This work surprised me with its technical side and its powerful sound. Jesus Aint In Poland managed to embed small ambient moments throughout their Grind mess which melds perfectly. They pieced together fast crushing Grind segments with Doom/Black Metal elements so precisely. Every song has a beautiful, yet suffocating dark atmosphere especially in the end of album. This beautiful specimen is wrapped in a neat little digipack. It has magical artwork with a very emotionally moving art piece. Plus it has the lovely, bitter smell of fresh paint. Noothgrush - S/T (Fuck Yoga Records)

It's surprising how many rare recordings are showing up these days. Look what I found! Very first demo of legendary Noothgrush has been re-released by Fuck Yoga Records. This self titled material was pressed on CDs and vinyl (so in the end the digital and analog freaks could satisfy their hunger). It's a miracle that somebody still has that tape in such nice condition. For obvious reasons I can't check the original sound however this digitized version sounds nice. I'm sure that sound engineer tried to remove all major interference but, this debut is still has its noisy and raw guts, which is so good. First of all these songs are not all that sludgy as we are used to hearing. This noise has the distinct characteristics of doom metal. The whole CD has a very interesting atmosphere. It will slowly suffocate you. Sometimes it arouses a sense of fear deep inside of your mind and it makes your skin crawl.Very strong bass guitar sound stands out (like in punk rock), it has a leading position in every song. Drums and guitar are a bit messy but, it also have a nice buzzing tone. Clean depressing vocals are especially good here, it's a huge part of this dark atmosphere. There is one small thing, it`s the background noise from the analog format. That thing spices the whole “Noothgrush” album. This edition has new gloomy art work, made by Jason Barnett btw. I like this work, it depicts some strange bird-reptoid characters, which are watching you with an unkind look, haha! Rating: 8/10 Noothgrus fb

Meth Drinker / Moloch (Grindfather prod)

I know that it is pretty strange for us to write a review on a genre that is far from Grind, but these bands are worth your attention guys. So without any more hesitation, I push this tape into my player. And… The endless abyss of black resin began to envelope me. It`s really hard to believe that such a small country like New Zealand could birth such a dreadful band. If I remember right Meth Drinker is not active anymore. And that makes me a little bit sad because their low sound infection is so good. This band acts so heavy and so painfully, their songs are full of dark atmosphere and crashing energy. The guitar sound slowly entering into your mind and corrupts it. Unholy screams and roars make this piece of mud even better. Each song like a poison, you dont even notice when it starts to melt you. So be very carefully while listening of this part.

Next is an ugly beast from the UK. During listening to this material I was not left with a feeling that Moloch is belching a dense black vomit. Seriously, their songs have a good doom metal taste; tunes are so slow and heavy and the agonizing vocals cause goose bumps. Also the whole sound is deep and viscous (and it`s very important for this kind of music). I guess that both of these gloomy songs can be perfectly used like a soundtrack for doomsday.

Su19b/Terror Firmer

This split seems to me like a moon which has two sides. Mystery dark side and shiny well known side. Japanese old samurais from Su19b will be on dark side (of course ;))... their music is very atmospheric. This dark and slow rhythms slowly penetrate your brain and paralyze your mind. There is only two songs but it`s really enough to scare you)) This sound like black resin... it`s dripping like a slime from the guitar riffs... Flies away from blast beats and trembles with the vibrations of the bass guitar... Throughout the listening Su19b part I was not left by the feeling that I`m listening to, Breathing and screeching of ancient monster. On the "white" side we have italian punk-grind warriors Terror Firmer. This side has no too low and dark sound, this noise is perceived very easily (after so harsh and dark attack from Su19b hehe). Fast thrashing riffs will strike you like arrows of the savages... "tupa tupa" beats sound so nice, It`s makes me swing, haha!) Harsh roars and screams... yes, that what I really want and all this noise spiced by old good punk. This pasta monster will be to the liking for many sick grindheads. In charge of the artwork was my old friend Huere (Huere Artworks/Insomnia Isterica)... This guys know how to make good punk art. Just look at this rotten and drunk drawing. Nice stuff isnt it?) Rating: 8.5/10 Terror Firmer Su19b

Su19b – The World Doomed To Violence (No Bread!)

Su19b's full album is what i've been looking forward to enjoy. The band was a little bit off the beaten path from the very beginning... but, actually, you can say that about many japanese bands. But I wasn't the only one drooling over the upcoming release. As a proof, we’ve got tons of sold out copies and multi-format releases. Here I'm going to review the cassette one. I should probably start with the only minus there...
The cover art was supposed to be square-shaped, but, since it’s a cassette, they had to distort it a little.
It's not that horrible, but still not really good... The album begins with quite a long droning piece, which creates piercing atmosphere that won't fade away till the end. You can feel it especially when the short tracks are playing. The sound is raw and deep; slow sticky death and doom riffs got replaced by the fast ones. Imagine that you can actually “hear” the cold and dampness of the grave, this is what "The World Doomed To Violence" sounds like. Agree with me or not, but Su19b sounds exactly like if Autopsy played doom with a little hit of grindcore.
