Agathocles / Psychoneurosis

Do you remember Romeros movies? Do you remember how the dead came back to life? Sometimes it happens with old bands. Moldy Grind bastards Psychoneurosis are here again! This Polish squad is legendary, and it`s nice to see them alive. For the reunion split release they picked up Agathocles, well known noise terrorists from Belgium. All this noise was released under Selfmadegod records in CD format. I must say the result is very pleasant. 2 pieces of cover art (you can switch them to your own taste), band photos, lyrics and more. But in total we have here only 12 songs, that's not much but this split is really rad. After a screaming intro, Agathocles starts their attack. That's what I call real Mincecore! I want to highlight the sound of this recording session. Also I noted 1 small lovely change in these songs. Jan used a pitch shifter! Just a bit, but it helps to refresh the songs, in my opinion. They sound heavier now. Guitar buzzing like a mad hive of bees, and the drums are raw and fast and the bass is crispy. This is one of my favorite AG release from this year. Psychoneurosis do their best, the new material sounds heavy as fuck, haha! The sound has a slight Metal taste, also it`s massive and bulldozing. All the songs are dynamic and loud, so you won`t be bored. These guys used few different kinds of vocals, in my opinion that is good, because that makes the songs brighter. The guitar has rather Death Metal tone rather than Grind , but that's not bad at all. There is one thing that stands out in the swarming drumming. The cowbell sounds incredible here, it makes this Noise spicier. In the end I can only say that I held in my hands a robust split with two epic dinosaur bands. Uitschot / Agathocles

The stream of new splits from Agathocles doesn`t ever seem to run dry, and that is awesome. This time we have a split with Uitschot (old band of Koen AG). This piece has pretty nasty cover art… A vomiting person who`s feeding the birds. The perfect way describe both of these bands to those who've never heard about Mince and Grind, haha! Inside I found a nice insert that depicted old photos and lyrics, nothing special but it looks good. Uitschot are no longer active punks, so thematerial that you will hear was recorded more than 10 years ago. So you can call it a blast from the past, hehe. To be honest i don`t like how this noise sounds. All the songs have a dull sound, but that's how it's supposed to sound, that old diy punk recording tone. Simple riffs, goofy structures, bad mastering and the fire of passion in the music. Most songs sound similar, I guess that's why it started to be boring at the middle of Uitschot's side. Noise and madness that's how I can describe this A side. Mighty Agathocles is performing with 10 old punk-influenced dirty songs with lyrics about nihilism, toxic hell, society's bullshit and protest against the system. All the noise was recorded back in 2014 (so it`s not so fresh) but it sounds very alive. During the listening I realized that the vinyl version sounds more catchy (yes it’s dirty and lacks in frequencies but it doesn't like garbage) than the digital variant that I found on the Internet. Musically there is nothing new, Belgian veterans just playing their brand of Mincecore that is full of hate… So if you`re into this band you should definitely get this split in your collection because it worth of it! Marxbros / Travølta

What could hide under artwork like this? Anarchopostpunkreggae? Funny grind? Nope - guys we have here a strong hardcore/violence 12” with two young but not stupid bands. Of course the cover is mostly a joke and it could push you away from this release, but I assure you, this noise is worth of your time. No more words, I'm putting this pitch black vinyl on my turntable and pressing the button! Netherland guys with the strange name Marxbros are on side A; we'll start with them. After a few songs I realized that this noise reminds me of real hardcore, with all simplicity, anger, and fun. There is no hip-hop stuff like in famous hardcore bands and I really appreciate it. It's rare to find bands in this genre which are true to the old school. Punky drums, wild yelling, simple guitar tone, good and catchy riffs are the ingredients of real and honest noise. Dutch language especially good for music like this, it makes everything spicier. Can't say that these guys took my heart, but I honestly enjoyed their material. Last, but not least, is Travølta. I know these cock-sparrows from Heultje city for a long time. Behind the goofy name is a lot of hidden potential. Travølta starts with clanging bass intro that turns into a violence massacre. Each song is full of punk energy and violence. Every component of this recording session has a pretty modern sound (on my taste of course), but together drums, guitar, bass and vocal create a twisting mess that sounds pretty nice. This is not the heaviest music that you could hear, but I`m sure that powerviolence/fastcore fans will be satisfied. Rating: 7.5/10 Travolta bc MarxBros bc

Brutal Sphincter - Analhu Akbar

So, what kind of music does a band with such a name play? Hard rock? Pornogrind? Cyberturboscat grind? Well you're not even close. These Belgian bastards make fun of politic and social topics. This band is active since 2012, they have 2 albums, both of them were released at famous Rotten Roll Rex. Analhu Akbar was vomited from the factory two month ago, so it's still warm. I like this art, it looks neutral to me. I mean there are no vaginas, dicks or other bullshit. It's just dirty terrorists and innocent victims, everything dedicated strictly to the album theme.  

Well at first, when I heard the beginning of the opening song I was thought “wtf is that Slipknot playing or what?”. First riffs sounds like some sort of low new-metal. But then guys engaged a nice portion of groovy & heavy noise and that made everything clear. While there certainly are touches of classic czhech school (NCC, Jig-Ai etc). Flurries of blastbeats (with a bit annoying trigger sound), minor-key riffs distorted into chainsaw grinding, everything above is covered with groovy and swing structures. Brutal Sphincter use few kinds of vocals in this album. The main is pitch shifted high vocal than guttural and pig squeal, it brings in a bit of variety in this dirty and nasty mess. I feel that I forgot about something, oh yes! The sound is monstrous and massive, sometime it reminds me CBT style.
If you haven’t heard this and you want dynamic groovy grind, get this album.

Assur - In Belgium There Is No Law (Vleesklak Records)

The Belgian scene is primarily known for iconic grind bands such as Agathocles, Mucus or Leng Tch'e, but there is one more band that I want to introduce you to. Meet Assur; raw grindcore with death metal influences that are located in Antwerp city. This band started in 2005, and according to information on the web they were not so active. Truly underground boys, haha! I guess that's why I only just found Assure. I got a huge box from Vleesklak Records with different promos, there I found “In Belgium There Is No Law”. To be honest, it's not the best design and art that I've seen so far. The tape has simple white and black design, and cassette has only one sticker - that's all. Not much, huh? But maybe the noise will be better? Let's check it!

The intro is nice, gloomy, slow, with simple riffs and vomiting growling… but then I heard synthetic double bit on bass drum, this drum machine sounds simply cheap. That spoiled impression in a bit. But there is a good things too, there is a lot of old primitive metal and grindcore riffs (old noise manicks would be happy). Also there is some groovy and catchy tunes like in “Billie” song. Mostly all fast pieces here are good, but some of slow ones (which reminds me lost and forgotten death metal bands) are a bit boring. This cassette has become very controversial for me, I could not decide whether I like Assur or not.

Agathocles - Commence To Mince (Selfmadegod rec)

Agathocles is pretty much an iconic band... they've been around forever. They are a very well known band, mostly because they are the inventors of mincecore, and they have massive discography. I believe they have more than 600 releases, it's a huge result for 30 years of existence. Today I will talk about their "Commence To Mince" album, this is the last full length at the moment (but maybe they are working on a new one while I'm writing this review, who knows?). The art for this album (I'm talking about CD version) has a very dumb design, haha! Ag just used their own photo, and, well, it's definitely not the best their cover. The booklet is huge and contains many photos from their Canadian journey and all of the lyrics, so all of the lyrics nerds can scream with Jan, haha! Here is the negative thing that I noticed about Ag... with the years, these guys lost their energy and power. So many of the new records sounds pale, but in live action they are still very strong. The CD version of this album sounds much better than the digital version from bandcamp, thanks gods, haha! I played it loud (it's necessary for mincecore), but it didn't catch my mind and soul. I felt a lack of power, perkiness and fire from the ass. Please understand me right, this recording session has a nice sound, good guitar tone, nice crusty noise from bass guitar and raw drums; but this is not enough. There were a few catchy moments, but that can't help revive "Commence To Mince". However, their cover of Desnutricao song "Orgulho Americano" is very invigorating and interesting - for me it`s the best track on this album. Rating: 7/10 Agathocles fb mincemania@hotmail.com
