SOOM - Джєбарс (Robustfellow)

Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need for slow, hellish music. Sometimes, I just want to hear something that is viciously callous and devastating. Thankfully, noise-terrorists SOOM recently released their second album Джєбарс, to be honest I expect a lot from this
full length...
Chief of the Robustfellow label gave me this tape for review. I must say, I was really surprised with its looks and design. This is some truly nerdy stuff; the colors, the form, the way the whole hardcover connected - it's really something. All polygraphy was made in Ukraine but the tapes were made and recorded in the UK. The quality of this sound just paralyzed me, haha! To be honest, I've seen SOOM live about 5 times and and they touched me only once, at the really first time with old line up, that was a show in small dirty bar, but the atmosphere and sound were amazing. Unfortunately all next times when I saw them, they had no effect on me. But I really dig their first album and hopefully “Джєбарс” is cool too…

This albums begins with long, heavy and slow intro… the whole first song is just an intro. “Вщент” is the first thing with real riffs and suffocating sound. I do not know how this tape was recorded (maybe it was done with some help from demons or something) but it sounds monstrous - my speakers go crazy with all these vibrations. SOOM produce low hypnotic tunes that could scare you. This pleasant heaviness slowly envelops you and than crushes you. Most of these songs are full of classical sludge/doom/drone elements. But that doesn't mean that this noise is a clone of famous bands. These dope-smokers have their own way, with their own specific tunes and theme of ancient magical molphars (it's something like pagan wizards). I also found a lot of noise and psychedelic experiments on this piece, guys didn`t limit themselves in music creation and that is very best.

“Джєбарс” is that mix of confusion and joy that comes from saying, "What on earth is this?" then moving to "Whatever this is, it rules!"

Fistula/Hemdale split 7” (Patac Records)

Both of these bands are veterans of the scene and need little to no introduction. Hemdale have been killing the Grind scene for the last 25 years, and Fistula have been hitting hard with filthy Sludge for 20 years. So you can definitely expect this 7” to pack a punch. Each band has a piece of art representing their side of the split so let’s talk about the filthy details. Fistula’s artwork depicts the rotting corpse of a man on a toilet. He clearly took his own life as you can see a goodbye note and a bottle of pills on the counter next to him. Now for the Hemdale side of the cover, it depicts a Skeleton or possibly the reaper caressing a heart shaped photo of Miley Cyrus. What an odd choice for a cover. But, enough of that, let’s get onto why we are all really here. The noise! First up is Fistula with Whore Cancer, and they waste no time. There’s a sample playing in the background with the instruments coming in full force. Once the sample closes we are immediately assaulted with some of the most Inhuman vocals I’ve personally ever heard. Dan Harrington is a master of his craft, his screams here can make the blood go cold and send a chill up your spine. Everything about this song reeks of the perfect Sludge sound. Big riffs, thundering drums, soul crushing bass lines and of course those nasty vocals. And now, we have Hemdale ready to slather things in blast laden Grinding goodness. They waste 0 time with this song as they come in ripping everything in sight to shreds. Blistering fast drums, a whirlwind bass and guitar riffs and vocals that sound like the Cookie Monster on steroids. There is a reason Hemdale are both revered and simultaneously feared by many. Sadly, this is a rather short 7”, I’d have enjoyed at least 1 more song from each band. But, all in all it is a perfect representation of Ohio’s Nastiest Noise makers.

Grief - Dismal (Fuck Yoga Records)

It's been 26 years since this album was released. But with no doubt, this massive work is still potent; these songs still can crush the bones and boil the blood. It’s surprising that this iconic piece of heaviness was re-released back in 2016 by Macedonian label Fuck Yoga Records. This nice CD version has few very tasty bonuses. Except the songs from “Dismal” are remastered tracks from the Grief/Dystopia 7" Split and the “Depression” EP (10 portions of sludge in total). The whole visual part was left almost without changes. All photography was printed with craft paper and it looks like a release from early 90’s (I guess that was the goal).
Dismal is heavy in many meanings… The sound literally presses you to the ground, the songs have a slow suffocating atmosphere which is hard to perceive. This noise can be described as “slow tunes that are soaked with a toxic acid which could melt your ears and brain”. I`m a huge fan of this low guitar tone, it sounds so raw and primal. The Bass is a lethal weapon, I hear it. I feel it, it`s so monstrous, this animalistic noise raises primitive fear and anxiety. Songs like “Shoot Me...” and “Virus” could cause irreparable harm to your mental health. The vocala are so savage, I swear I can feel the suffering in these harsh screams, fuck ,that deserves respect. The sound of the drums could be compared with only hammering nails into a coffin (of course with you inside).
Verdict. Dismal is a perfect relic and great example of that how Sludge should be.

New stuff from Fistula!

Noothgrush - S/T (Fuck Yoga Records)

It's surprising how many rare recordings are showing up these days. Look what I found! Very first demo of legendary Noothgrush has been re-released by Fuck Yoga Records. This self titled material was pressed on CDs and vinyl (so in the end the digital and analog freaks could satisfy their hunger). It's a miracle that somebody still has that tape in such nice condition. For obvious reasons I can't check the original sound however this digitized version sounds nice. I'm sure that sound engineer tried to remove all major interference but, this debut is still has its noisy and raw guts, which is so good. First of all these songs are not all that sludgy as we are used to hearing. This noise has the distinct characteristics of doom metal. The whole CD has a very interesting atmosphere. It will slowly suffocate you. Sometimes it arouses a sense of fear deep inside of your mind and it makes your skin crawl.Very strong bass guitar sound stands out (like in punk rock), it has a leading position in every song. Drums and guitar are a bit messy but, it also have a nice buzzing tone. Clean depressing vocals are especially good here, it's a huge part of this dark atmosphere. There is one small thing, it`s the background noise from the analog format. That thing spices the whole “Noothgrush” album. This edition has new gloomy art work, made by Jason Barnett btw. I like this work, it depicts some strange bird-reptoid characters, which are watching you with an unkind look, haha! Rating: 8/10 Noothgrus fb

Od Vratot Nadolu - Жива (Fuck Yoga Records)

Finally it's Sludge time on Good Guys Go Grind! Believe me boys and girls, today I dug up a very special (maybe totally unknown thing for most of you), album for you guys. I want to present you with the only work of Od Vratot Nadolu (From the Neck Down, sorry if my translation is wrong). The fact that this massive work was lost in the void of oblivion is not fair and unbelievable. This slow and beautiful full length was born in mysterious Macedonia somewhere in 2010. Unfortunately I didn't find a lot of information about this band… I know that this drum and bass duo is no longer active. Well that is truly sad, because “Жива” surprised and impressed me a lot, this album is something like Pandora's Box. The box with negative and vile emotions, which can tear you down. Both Marko (drums/vocals) and Goran (bass/vocals) put everything they had into this record. I perfectly feel the raw emotions they put into it. Hysterical, chaotic and schizophrenic tunes brings me into this noise hell. These melodies are so painful, they can even damage your mental condition, ahaha! I havent heard of many bass and drums bands (especially in the Sludge genre) but Oд Вратот Надолу proved that they are worth at least of 3 usual bands with guitars! Why you ask? Let's start with this beautiful stringed instrument. Deep and low Bass just drive me crazy, it has such great tone, and its distorted so well too. Sometimes it sounds almost like a guitar (just check “Nekoj vi gi ebe Decata”). The drum part is wonderful too. Fast, with hardcore speed and structures, these beats sound like hammer blows. The cymbals have a nice crumbling sound, that cover everything. And of course the agony fueled yelling and scream… I bet that both of these dudes had spite their lungs out by the end, haha! What a wonderful piece of work! Rating: 9/10

Su19b - Neutralize (Grindfather prod)

This year my audio library was replenished by another excellent release… a new dreadful thunderbolt from old honorful Japanese sludge  pv grind band Su19b)) This tape has been stuck in my Harman Kardon deck for some time. The new album has an unpleasant feel of a disgusting and dark atmosphere that will drag you into the abyss and suffocate you. Its so heavy and magical work, the release resembles the motion of lithosphere plates… cover art matches the music perfectly. The cover is artistically very professionally done, delivering a sad and scary scenario of neverending war, destroying the planet and collecting our human souls. Extremely skillfully made, with many small nasty details...WOW!!!
The entrance to this purgatory is rather long and gloomy, inspiring doubts and fear… a feeling of entering the darkness. This goes for the title track Neutralize, the heaviest attack in the entire discography of this band. You will notice a remarkable difference between the earlier album "The world doomed to violence", and this one… the new material is SO much heavier sound wise. It contains loads more atrocious Death Metal, mixed in with swamping sludge. The guitar sound is so unnaturally low and heavy it can grind everything down in its way, hahaha. Solos come into the fray, and ugly vocals continue this twisted narration. I want to highlight the slow parts, every riff is like a painful blow from a hammer...
Su19b brings loads of psychedelic fears to your mind, so be careful with this album boys and girls.
