We Sleep - Uniform Fuckface (Sengaja Records)

Extreme hardcore / fastcore – no more and no less. But before you click away, think about why you might object to those words. Loud yelling? To many simple riffs? Tattooed guys in cargo shorts?) Maybe, but at least give a chance to this German band. “Uniform Fuckface” is just their first serious work, so let’s be easier with them. So on this piece of plastic guys tried to focus on good speed and on aggression. Well, they managed with these two points pretty well. The bio says that We Sleep consist of 4 members, each unit for 1 instrument, these bastards are based in Hamburg. It seems clear that these guys have a strong lyric part, which focuses on social themes (usual things for hc/grind/violence bands) and it`s reflected in the cover art too. All these skulls, ruins, nuclear blasts, dark colours, victims theme it`s really an old song and dance… and today has become very hard to surprise anyone with that kit.

It will be a lie if I say that this band stands out from the legion of other fresh hardcore/fastcore bands, but their songs are nice. In these fast rhythms and yelling mess I found few good catchy moments. Also I want to notice a good sound (as for modern times), it`s pretty clean and it make this record very listenable. And the other good thing is it`s total time of all songs. This EP is pretty short, “Uniform Fuckface” were lighting fast,flash, boom and it`s already the last song. And it`s really good, because (for me) if guys were to make the duration about 30 minutes, then that stuff would sound pretty boring.

X-Torsion - Do It Your Hell (Sengaja Records)

X-Torsion is a very nice band which is based in Barcelona,Spain. Their previous album Odio Eterno was really nice, but it has been a couple of years since that album was released, and now our Spanish friends are back to treat us with a new and badass album. That new album will fill your heart up with a nasty punk groove and with a lot of crushing grind outbursts. Like in previous things the cover art for this album has the same style. This cover seems to me like a piece of a cartoon or something like that. It`s lovely and no too serious… Hard to imagine what is hidden under that art. When I started to listen to this album I couldn't avoid the fact that X-Torsion did some small but good changes. The first noticeable change is hidden in song structures. These songs became more brutal, with more grindcore aggression and primitiveness. Loud blast beats, angry vocals and short guitar riffs. The second pleasant accentuation is about great melodic guitar solos and riffs (like in songs such as Contaminacion and Anulacion De La Vida). This crust/hardcore/grind madness has a very cool balance. These songs are not boring, some of them are short and fast (they sounds more like grindcore), some have a great punk spirit (which can drive you crazy) and of course theres some songs with dark and beautiful melodies. I guess many of the crust/grind fans will deeply dig into this album, because you deserve for it. Rating: 8.5/10 X Torsion bc X Torsion fb

Graben – S/T (Sengaja Records)

I think that I should put this review to the offtop section, because these guys are not even close to grindcore. But whatever it is, this album is worth your attention (even just because this will distract from grindcore and other noises). It's even hard to imagine what this album looks like visually, because I can't remember where I had seen something similar. But this cover uniquely attracts by its mysterious darkness. It's difficult to determine what these Germans had mixed here. No doubt that the basis for this stuff is hardcore and metal, but at times it breaks away to black metal pieces, a little bit of doom notes also you can hear some crustcore moments. Also, the strong side of this album is its atmosphere. It is pretty dark and guys managed to maintain it until the end of the album. The music of Graben does not contain any super frills, it has no ultra fast rhytms, but once you listen to these 11 songs they just 'wrap' you. I have enjoyed how guys put together aggressiveness and gloomy melodic sounds. For instance, the song Unheil impressed me, the sound of the rain, the sound of the piano and gloomy tunes. The song acts as an intro to the powerful and evil Kartenhaus track and together they sound very solid... I venture to suggest that the record will be enjoyed by hardcore fans as well as by fans of Scandinavian crust.

Butrön ‎– El Legado De La Barbarie

Gooood morning Spain! I finally found some time to write about Spanish hardcore scene and today I will talk about second album of Butrön band. Black like resin vinyl and gloomy art... these zombie buffalos really attract attention. Sometimes I am really amazed how people just with couple of brushes and colors can create something endowed with such atmosphere. If you`ll look closely then on the muzzles of animals you will read torment and pain and anger... These matadors from Barcelona I remember well by their pleasant hardcore crust... or rather how well they joined both styles. Here you can hear some melodics and harsh speed and (especially) gloomy atmosphere. For example the guitar sound perfectly saws the brain and a good rhythm of the songs makes them jump around inside your brain. Rapid temps, avalanche drum beats, hysterical vocals... it's really great but with add a melody this seething mass just got better! So guys do everything right when they decided to dilute their music with different bleak melodies. And also we should pay attention to the sound of this album too. El Legado De La Barbarie sounds very confident, sound is shrill and sharp, it cuts into the ear membranes, and that feels very good. Rating: 7.5/10 Butron fb Butron bc

KSM 40 - The Taste of Rust

We continue exploring the world of German music. This time I decided to write about the KSM 40 band. I got really confused by the art on the cover at first. First I thought that this was some kind of crust (these guys love to draw something similar), but when I took a closer look I realised that I was wrong. That's the goddamn super Sonic! Hahaha, it might have been designed in some weird way and it seems like he is not feeling well but it is definitely him. The artist dedicated the cover to the world of old school video games, but unfortunately I'm not a gamer at all, so Sonic was the only character I recognized) What's interesting is that it’s the second time I see such a rare thing. Other than that, there’s a hyper link to download the album. This is very useful for those who doesn't have a vinyl player and they have just bought this vinyl copy to support the band. 

The content of "The Taste of Rust" is following: it's a well-balanced hardcore-punk with a reference to thrashcore. Fast, noisy and sencere. It’s nothing unusual but these Germans are quite fun and cheerful. You could listen to all the songs on one breath and won't get bored once. Do you remember me talking about the game-themed cover? Sure thing, these guys didn’t forget to add some music from old school video-games to their tracks. «KSM40 bleibt!» is the song in which you could hear squek and clacking game sounds mixed with the music we are used to.

Honestly speaking, this split was one of those 2015 releases which I was waiting for. And after I finally listened to it, I realized that waiting was not for nothing! So I will not go into long introduction, I'll start right on the part of the Spanish... X-Torsion already has one full-length album behind, so now they decided to deliver some fresh stuff on split release. The visual part reminds of (and perhaps it is a follow up to) the first album cover art, everything with the same funny black humor of gore / horror picture. But fresh tracks surprised me, in a good way of course. The sound became a bit more aggressive and fat. It feels that the boys added more grind to this record. It goes fast and cool. Progress is visible and it is very good. Cruel Face - Brazilian veterans. After a long break for fucking 8 years they are back in business. Brazilian visual part is rather bizarre. Huge black widow spider (with a female face) is doing some terrible things to several representatives of Homo Sapiens species)) By the way, one of the founders and the constant participant of this band is Alex from Rot (and this dude is able to cut a good riff). For this split, they recorded 4 fresh tracks... What can I say, that is strong shit. Uncomplicated rhythms easily penetrate the brain and just rip it into pieces. Of course the material is straightforward, but it is a feature of the Brazilian grindcore, for which everyone loves it.

Sunlun – Ceaseless Exhausting Pursuit (Sengaja Records)

Have you ever heard something about german crust bands? If you haven’t, you can check guys from Sunlun. As for their music, they are a good example of Swedish Crust School. To be honest, at first I was thinking that it is the next copy of Wolfbrigade, but then I had changed my mind. Their songs are good mixture of crust, hardcore, death metal and even a little bit of doom with black metal (we can call it neocrust) I guess, cover of album could say a lot about music inside. You can appreciate fight of wolves on it, good job of artist. There is the poster for those, who like to bomb their walls. All these visual arts are good start for feeling the atmosphere of release. And then we have 10 quite different songs. D-beat and aggressive guitar riffs are intertwined with melancholic melodies. You can find there very atmospheric small sound fragments of wind, rain, etc.. Maybe someone will say that this music is too melodic, but I think it is as much melodic as it should be. Also I want to mention, that guys did this release very balanced, doom and black parts look like very harmonic and are making feelings of finished work. The last blackened crust song Dysfunctional is the final bloody point of whole album.

X​-​Torsion - Odio Eterno (Sengaja Records)

Spain is very rich for all kinds of talents. This wonderful country gave birth to a lot of great bands. But the most famous bands will be reviewed next time. Today, I want to put on a GGGG turntable the first album of a young band called X-torsion. If you do not take their participation in compilation into account, then OdioEterno is their first serious work. Hmmm, maybe I have to go to a psychiatrist, but the art on this album made me smile. A sort of a funny black humor half-rotten cartoon head, I could not not see anything repulsive. The group is new to me, but after carefully listening to the album I did not find anything new. But that does not mean anything bad, I guess it is just too difficult to surprise me with the music. The mere fact that the debut album was released on vinyl is already surprising, because that is not cheap at all... The content of black (as the old rock fan's T-shirt) is full of energy. That mix of fast hc-punk and fastcore, with some notes of grindcore - that really rocks. There are songs for any taste. Want some punk - there you go, want something harder - is also possible. The highlight for me here was the vocals. Spanish makes the music sound more angry.

The aim of the label is to help befriended bands put out records and spreading the word about them.
