Nak'ay / Pizza Hi Five

Grind addicts like me spend a lot of time on the internet searching for good noise. Despite the fact that this is an old release, Nak'ay / Pizza Hi Five was one of these split that I was excited to find back in 2015. I listened to it on bandcamp tons of times, this really good noise, years after I finally got a hard copy from Psychocontrol Records and damn, that day I was happiest freak in this part of the world. One of the first things that caught me was this silly art. It reminds me covers from thrash metal/crossover era. It simple, punky, aggressive and stupid; everything that we love in arts like this.

Chainsaw riffs, blast beats and murder vocals are what Nak'ay has to offer. Side A is full of smashing riffs and heavy sound, this noise is invite you to headbang or to mosh. But there are not only short and brutal riffs I found there some nice solos and few harsh melodies (they had some death metal taste). Drum work is impressive, these blast beats are so intensive and fast. Savage vocal style is just perfect for this ugly mess. Unfortunately this side is so fucking short, I'm tired to moving the needle to the beginning of the first song, haha!

Noise terrorist from Pizza Hi Five are closing this split with really robust material. The whole side is groovy, catchy… this grindcore has more punk spirit than Nakay has. The energy of this noise is so strong it charged me, I really appreciate things like that in grindcore. Buzzing guitar is cool, cookie monster vocal is loud and crazy and the blast beats are fast… perfect ingredients for good grind pizza.

Rating: 8/10 Nak'ay Pizza Hi Five

Durian - Brutalism (Psychocontrol Records)

Powerful punch! Bleeding eardrums! All out total destruction! All out total Grindviolence! This is what you are going to get when blasting the new Durian EP! Guys from New Jersey have no time for jokes, and this release is truly tight! I'm really happy that guys didn't drop the music after Chainsaw to the Face has split up. Durian is more angry than its predecessor, but it has similar roots. By the way - the cover art of Brutalism reminds me a bit “Plague Worship” of CTTF. In my opinion this 4 pieces band kicks asses and now I will explain why... Black vinyl, 9 songs and a fuckin' punchy opening; that's what you'll get if you put this 7” on your turntable. Bones’ flash and ferocious guitar is a true force of nature here, squeezing out notes at 100 miles an hour! Caveman style aggressive shouted vocal is truly savage, together with classical powerviolence screams they're creating a nice mess. Drum section is a bit raw but damn good and fast. This EP has quite clanking bass, you can perfectly hear it in the song “Erase”. It's hard to choose the best song/songs here, every shot is good and has biting anger! So grab a drink and blast this record until you’ve pissed off all of your neighbours. You won’t regret it. Rating: 8.5/10 Durian bc

Needful Things - Deception (Psychocontrol records)

Czech veterans Needful Things stunned me with the news about their new album. I remember that I thought, “Hell yeah, one more pleasant surprise for this year”, and I was right. This album (3rd in order) proved to be strong in taste (like shot of vodka) and heavy with its sound. In addition to all of this, the album has a very good visual design. I like how the artist compiled all the elements together and chose a beautiful set of colors. The main theme of this art is blind justice, victims, endless destruction, and as a consequence, oblivion in ones own ignorance. Classical? Yes! But not boring at all. Deception rips and slams its way from beginning to end; unleashing fifteen tracks of pure chaos. As usual, the songs are short and full of energetic rage and abrasive aggression. The music combines speed and extremity with dynamic riffs and a massive heavy sound. At first glance, this album may seem like a continuous blasting piece, mostly because of the opening song (it really sounds critically fast). I can assure you there are many different song tempos and structures from fast to slow. I like how all the instruments are combined, and together they create an impressive monolith. The grisly guitars are rumbling through my brain and I know I’ve lost control again. The low crusty bass sound is really tasty, the vocals are really emotional, and these screams and roars are handsome. The drumming fires off with pure insanity; blast beats are fast and nothing stands out from the sound line. This album is full of hate and energy - it could be compared with an MMA-style cage match. More than 20 years of action, tons of records, and powerful performances on the world's stages; all of this is not empty words, and they proved it with “Deception”. If you like warp speed music, then “Deception” will become your shot of adrenaline. Rating: 8.5/10 Needful Things fb Needful Things bc

Needful Things / Overviolence (Psychocontrol records)

Today is Tuesday and, as always, this day sucks, so let's plug it with a split from Needful Things and Overviolence! As I know, originally this split was released as a tape and it was released for an Asia tour. Now it's been turned into a vinyl, and holy moly this piece looks great. Weird cover art, with gloomy faces, a combination of colors all of which create a nice aggressive and Grind look. Needful Things is a Grind mastodon of the Czechs scene. Can you believe that this machine has been active more than 20 years? And they're still in great shape, just check how loud their blast beats are, haha! Their style of music hasn’t shifted any and is worthy of respect. For this split our friends recorded 3 tracks. These 3 songs are all written in a similar style to an effective template that alters each time but keeps the same basic elements (like fast and short guitar riffs, bulldozering bass and heavy blast beats), time changes are kept to the same mid to fast pace and back again formula. Everything above is spiced with massive, thundering and demonic sound. That's how grindcore should be! Play louder, play faster! That's the main rule of the mad Swedes in Overviolence. They caught me with their first EP, I remember I was really surprised about the level of violence in their music. With this work, the boys show their Grindcore side. This material has less of Powerviolence and Fastcore feel, and more of a traditional Grindcore feel. And I like this small change. The combination of speed, simple structures and ferocity create a very painful pressure. The guitar tone perfectly fits with the blasting madness and bass sound. A few variations of vocals make this mess sound more intense and alive. This is a really robust cup of sound torture! Rating: 8/10 Needful ThingsGrind fb Overviolence fb

Chainsaw to the Face - Plague Worship (Psychocontrol records)

We all know that time is a really massive and strange thing. It can give and it can also take away... Time is a good challenge, so not even the most well prepared bands can go through it. Chainsaw to the Face was not around long but, this band left a memorable scar in my mind. That's why I want to dedicate a review in memory of this badass band. These guys from New Jersey have great talent, they know how to find a balance between brutality and good punk riffs. Also, they know the line, so they don't make a mess with blasting drums and fast buzzing guitars. That`s a few good things about Chainsaw to the Face. As soon as the needle hits the vinyl the real chaos begins. This band has never been soft, these boys always know how to make a kick very painful, haha! I like the way this band is using different moments from Grindcore, Hardcore and Punk. Each song is like a small blow, its fast, loud and deadly. Sharp riffs and blast beats intermingle and mix and that could lead to explosive situations. Slow moments just carry you into the jaws of madness, speed and brain crushing energy. Plague Worship has a perfect quantity of raw patina, and that definitely helps to sound more aggressive and primitive (which is adorable). All of the above is stored in a nice paper sleeve with a lovely design (you will also find all the necessary information here). I like how the X-ray pictures of foetuses are mixed with photos of natural destruction. I think that this collage is perfect for this grindviolence release. Rating: 8/10 Chainsaw To The Face bc

Communicates - Restricted (Psychocontrol records)

BANZAII!!! I mean mail day, haha!) I was damn excited about this parcel, and in particular for this release. It's very rare for a labels (especially fro Europeans labels), to release such bands, (which makes me very sad). That is why I`m very exited to see these new shiny tunes, being released through Psychocontrol Records. For those of you who are not familiar with this act, - Communicates is a fast noisy act from Suginami city. I don't know when they were founded, or how many releases they`ve made, but thats not so important. The main, and most delicious thing, is hidden in their music, I`m sorry, in their noise. So, the tunes... you get 5 fast, fun songs ,in just under 10 minutes.“Restricted”, opens up with "Triforce", this track is like a minor explosion, filled with powerful energy, 1:30 and it's over. These guys shreds trough the tracks with a freaking amazing, and intense raw energy. This style is often being defined as "Japanesecore, or Japcore" by many of us, and under this tag, we usually mean a damned filthy mix of Punk, Thrashcore, Hardcore and Rock n roll. Indeed, this ep is full of these genres. Crazy drumming, crashing sound of cymbals… nice and loud yelling, endless buzzing guitar noise and some silly simplicity. This dangerous mix, will make you grab the nearest skateboard, and skate yourself to death, haha!) The final track, “Protect the Answer”, is a stand out. With the longest title on the album (and also the longest track on here), this is a perfect way of ending this noisy thing. These tunes are running pretty slowly, until the end of the track, then it culminates in a surprisingly fast and powerful smack RIGHT in the face. This tiny slab of vinyl could be a good alternative, (or rather a breath of fresh air), to those of you, whos run a bit tired of the usual standard grinding blast beat madness, pitchshifted nauseating vocals, and technical riffs… Rating: 8/10 Communicates bc

Dead Issue / Raw Noise Apes

Wow it`s a really tight split! Both bands are a good examples of harsh and blast grindcore. Both they are full of ferocity, speed and deadly power. So lets put this vinyl on my turntable and switch on this hell!
Side A - Dead Issue. This guys are one the best representatives of USA grindcore bands. This squad is manned with fragments from Bloody Phoenix & Endless Demise (so you can imagine what will be waiting for you, haha!). But for the first deal lets look at the cover. Hmm I guess this time guys tried to be as primitive as possible (in comparison with previous works of course), but anyway it`s stil looks pretty elegant. Sad but this is the last 4 songs from them (now Dead Issue are in deep hiatus), but how dangerous they are, hehe!) There is so much good riffs and rhythms... All songs consist of simple structures. All noise begins with slow intro and then the hell opens! That shit sounds like a explosion in a quarry, big "boom" and then little pieces of rock scattering around with a crazy speed. Guitars sound is low and sharp, drums beats painfully beat you on the brain, and gloomy vocal will finish you off.

Side B - Raw Noise Apes. The barbarian squad from Greece. Stop whatever you're doing and check this gorgeous arts! Niihama-san (badass artist from Japan) made this one. This picture is pretty psychedelic and contains so many small details. Fuck i really want a shirt with that art, haha!) It`s like a "Raw Noise Apes in Wonderland" hahaha!) So now lets talk about the noise. Like I said before, these guys are real barbarians (they dont mix water and vine like they ancestors in ancient Greece, lol) their songs are raw, dirty and primitive too. Guitar sound is heavy like an old Titan punch! Guys use few vocal styles and that add to this noise more anger. All instruments sound like one well-tuned rusty machine haha!
