Balance of Terror - World Laboratory (Ghastly Music)

Today's offering is the debut record from Balance of Terror - This release is 8 tracks of brutal death metal from the north of France, put out by Ghastly Music.

This came to me packaged up in a professionally done CD - admittedly, it's been a long time since I've actually opened a new CD (I’ve been spoiled by records and cassettes), but this has the look and feel of a very well put together release. Sadly, the global postal system STILL hasn’t figured out how to not break things… Anyway. I really like the art - to me, it seems like it’s a bit more appropriate for a black metal release, but I think that’s probably because of the cold colors that were used; it makes it feel winter-y to me, and my mind automatically goes to black metal. But, the art is very well done, and it does suit this release quite well.

How does it sound? Let’s find out. We open up with an intro that just kicks you right in the face with a slow death metal build up. It’s here that we get to hear the tone of everything before we break into the madness. First of all - this is a REALLY well produced release. The guitars are clear and present, the drums are tight and punchy, the vocals are brutal and right up front, and the bass brings that low end, springy feel to it. After the intro, we break right into a hyper speed blast beat and a nasty technical riff - yup, this is definitely death metal. The mix here stays consistent, and it’s really a pleasure to listen to a well mixed release every once in a while. Past the actual sound of it - how are the songs? Well, for one, they’re long. Most tracks are in the 4 to 5 minute range, and as a grindcore reviewer, this feels like an eternity. There are a LOT of really well put together riffs and transitions here, but for my tastes, I wish they cut out a lot of the filler and just kept the brutal parts. The blasting parts definitely have a grind feel, but after the first few tracks, it’s gotten pretty stale waiting for those parts.

I just want to make it clear here - if you’re a brutal death metal fan, this is a really solid release. It sounds great, and it’s good death metal. But, for my grindcore based tastes, I can really only enjoy a track or two from this release before I get bored. Listening through the whole thing kind of felt like a chore, if we’re being honest, though I started off being really into it.

Rubufaso Mukufo / Nervous Impulse / Epicrise

Wake up sleepy head, it's time for Grind! Today your silent morning will be crushed with this nice 3-way split. So let's find out what is hidden under this cheesy cover art... It's so lovely to see that Rubufaso Mukufo is back! This is a new line up, new power, new sound and life for this band (at least I hope so). I can honestly say that these 11 songs are a good step in a direction to a new higher level. All the material has a better, more clean sound (with metal taste). The songs wreak of punk riffs and great guitar sound. These guys are using different approaches in vocal parties. There are “clean” roars, screams and parts where a pitch shifter was used. The mix of intensive drumming and clanking bass are creating sweet chaos. And all together that stuff sounds freaking groovy and invigorating! I want to be honest, it was hard for me to find the right words for this band… because this unit has a mess of genres inside. Nervous Impulse is from Canada and their music is based on Brutal Death Meta. I got the impression that the guys can not decide what they want to play. In one moment Grind riffs turning in brutal tremolo with low breakdowns… Grind yelling turning in to some low fi guttural gurgling… These tracks have some good grind parts, but all these boring "brutal" things (with triggered drums) spoil the whole impression... Unfortunately, the guys from Epicrise didn't record anything new in ages. These tracks were taken from their old demo “Dead Sea”. But in my opinion this is one of the best pieces of material from this band. A little bit raw sound with metal touch, good rhythmic pace and a ton of fun. Unfortunately the sound of the bass guitar is cluttered by the other instruments and that is a pity. One of the positive moments of this recording session is the strong vocals and smashing d-beats and blast beats. As a small bonus the guys added few nice covers of Dead Infection, Grossmember and Cerebral Turbulency. This atomic thing is full of fast guitars, crushing beats and punching energy, so what else do you need?) Rating: Rubufaso Mukufo: 8/10 Nervous Impulse: 6/10 Epicrise: 7.5/10

Smallpox Aroma - Collection of Vivisection

Thailand is a country sort of shrouded in mystery when it comes to Grind and other extreme genres of music. Hailing from Bangkok,Thailand Smallpox Aroma bring us a bone splintering dose of Goregrind and Grindcore. This release features 70 tracks from across their discography. The cover art is very simple and doesn't distract you too much from the real artistry. Depicting a human head swarming with maggots and insect larvae. Now let's dig into the massive feast laid before us. I must admit it's definitely odd to hear Smallpox Aroma with a drum program/drum machine after being so adjusted to their sound with real drums. The first few songs are less Grind and more of a Brutal Death Metal/Slam feel. Which isn't horrible because they still manage to mix in Grind elements throughout. Once the real Goregrind/Grindcore fury kicks in it is just endless. Gurgling putrid grunts,bone chilling shrieks,chainsaw riffs and pinging to high hell drums! The tempo never seems to hit a lull, constantly feeding your aural receptors into a woodchipper. The raw energy and aggression shown on this compiled release prove this band is a force unlike most others. Several times throughout this album I wanted to get up and dance because the groove was so thick. Other times I wanted to rip someone apart in a mosh pit. To say this album doesn't have a bit of everything for Gore fans, is saying Thailand has no extreme music. Rating: 7/10 Smallpox Aroma fb
