Axis of Despair - Contempt for Man

Well today is the day! Swedish grinders Axis of Despair have finally released their first full length album! Hip-hip hooray! This work sounds much stronger than the previous 2 EPs. This album is the real deal; half an hour of insane Grindcore in the relentless Swedish style. These guys managed to make this album deep in so many ways, strong lyrics about human behavior, social queues and the blackest shit in our souls. The awesome artwork (drawn by Paul Romano) has many key features; including a dark atmosphere and cold undertone. Then of course there is the music. All the songs were not written by a single individual. Each song is intricately written by one of the band members, so in the end we have something along the lines of a compilation of each members greatest traits shining through. Despite that fact that these guys are all different people with different views, all the songs sound like they flow in one smooth line. 

Contempt for Man is the complete package: twenty songs of pure brutality and anger. One of the things on this album that I love most, is it`s a great balance between instrumental parts and vocals. Joel did a great job; he screams exactly as much as these songs need, he does not clutter everything with roars, and that is necessary. Anders drum work is amazing, the reverberation of the cymbals and the stuttering blasts just get inside me and I lose all sense of time and place. Oskar managed to catch a really nice and low tone. The grizzly sound of his bass guitar brings some dense notes into the whole song structure. Fast riffing from Kristofer could smash your skull. The buzzing tunes from his instrument literally drilled my ears, ha! 

As you may know this band features members of Nasum. But, believe me Axis of Despair sounds nothing like Nasum. They have their own view of Grindcore and they don’t intend to change. So if you like fast blasting Grindcore with a great concept, go and listen to this album!

Axis Of Despair - Time And Again / Mankind Crawls

Axis Of Despair is a brand new name in the history of Swedish grindcore. Just look at the list of associated projects of the members of this AOD: Overtorture, Volturyon, Livet som insats, Nervgift, Infanticide, Nasum, Coldworker, Proteststorm. Impressive, isn't it?) But don't make quick judgment that we'll hear just another clone of Nasum or Infanticide. There is something familiar with all those bands for sure but they are far from being clones. So the material for these two EPs was recorded on a few recording sessions in the legendary Soundlab Studios in Örebro. But it so happened that Time And Again was issued much earlier than Mankind Crawls, as always it was due to banal delays. Both recordings are pieces of one whole thing so it doesn't make any sense to talk about them separately. Now let's take a closer look at the musical part of this monster thing. Just from the first accords we hear the patented Swedish grindcore sound (everything Swedish sounds special so its easy to recognize). The piercing sound just makes other bands suffer from envy. All songs sound truly furious, its felt like the guys inserted a part of their souls into the recording. All musicians keep the level high but separately I want to pay attention to the hellish blastbeats of Anders Jakobson… doesn't matter for how long I listen to his drumming, I'm always excited of the speed (sometimes you think that such drummers sell their souls in exchange for sick drumming). In short, if you like Swedish grindcore and haven't listened to Axis Of Despair yet, than fix this as soon as possible!)

We have here Axis Of Despair today, how are you guys? Already getting christmas presents for your relatives?)

Joel: We are fine thank you! I for one am trying to do it the King Diamond way: No presents for christmas.

As I can see, band is around since 2013. It may sound repeating but in order to close the informational gap, could give us your short bio?

Anders: OK. Joel (vocals), Oskar (bass) and I (drums) used to play together in Coldworker. We did our final gig at Obscene Extreme 2013. We were supposed to just have “a break”, but it was apparent that we were only fooling ourselves. So we quit at OEF. During the following summer we had a talk about starting something new and I wanted to play slow and heavy music because I wanted to play something completely different after 20+ years of blasting. Not much happened and when I begun talking to a few people who could be potential guitarplayers one of them wanted to play grind instead. So change of plans, and the first incarnation of what would be Axis of Despair begun as the three of us plus a guitarplayer. We wrote and rehearsed 6-7 songs or something for a couple of months and then the guitarplayer decided to quit the band. After searching for a new guitarist for a while we got in touch with Kristofer who didn’t live in our town but visited often and we gave it a try, and we’ve continued ever since. The rehearsals haven’t been as often and regular, which is why it took quite some time before we did our first recording, but we aren’t in any rush.
