Infanticide - Misconception Of Hope

Did you miss some good Swedish grindcore? I don't know about you, but I definitely miss it...Despite not being a fresh album, Misconception Of Hope deserves to be posted on the pages of this zine, because its solidness and coolness hasn’t tarnished over years. As far as I know Infanticide took a break for now, so while we’re all waiting for something new from them, I suggest you read this review and check out their last album once again. The main thing that makes Swedish music stand out from all other music genres is a good sound quality (The Swedes are perfectionists :)). The sound is a bit metallized, but deep and solid, it just digs the listener into the ground. Infanticide are playing the kind of grindcore that reminds me of stonefall...a powerful stream of hundreds of stones which fall right onto you and then, in one moment, crash you into small bloody pieces. Continuous blast beats grind bones, and the guitar sound and smashing riffs cut the flesh. Now I want to look at the vinyl and its insert. Vinyl version of Misconception Of Hope was housed in the gatefold. Excellent cover art (artist - Alex Eckman-Lawn) that perfectly suits the black-and-yellow splatter vinyl. Axis Of Despair - Time And Again / Mankind Crawls

Axis Of Despair is a brand new name in the history of Swedish grindcore. Just look at the list of associated projects of the members of this AOD: Overtorture, Volturyon, Livet som insats, Nervgift, Infanticide, Nasum, Coldworker, Proteststorm. Impressive, isn't it?) But don't make quick judgment that we'll hear just another clone of Nasum or Infanticide. There is something familiar with all those bands for sure but they are far from being clones. So the material for these two EPs was recorded on a few recording sessions in the legendary Soundlab Studios in Örebro. But it so happened that Time And Again was issued much earlier than Mankind Crawls, as always it was due to banal delays. Both recordings are pieces of one whole thing so it doesn't make any sense to talk about them separately. Now let's take a closer look at the musical part of this monster thing. Just from the first accords we hear the patented Swedish grindcore sound (everything Swedish sounds special so its easy to recognize). The piercing sound just makes other bands suffer from envy. All songs sound truly furious, its felt like the guys inserted a part of their souls into the recording. All musicians keep the level high but separately I want to pay attention to the hellish blastbeats of Anders Jakobson… doesn't matter for how long I listen to his drumming, I'm always excited of the speed (sometimes you think that such drummers sell their souls in exchange for sick drumming). In short, if you like Swedish grindcore and haven't listened to Axis Of Despair yet, than fix this as soon as possible!)

Livet Som Insats - Check your Grind

Well, guys, last year was pretty bad for really good releases... we had a lot to filter to find something really worthy. And about one of those worthy albums I want to talk today. Swedish trio Livet Som Insats is loved by all fans of fast and aggressive music. Also they have really crazy fans (just lloks at video from OEF) and it just only confirms the fact that the band is really worth attention. I guess something like two years had passed since their last release and this expectation was fully rewarded. From the very first seconds guys start hellish attack. Not a complicated songs structures only added sharpness to this material (so it is easier sucked into the brain). I don't know how about you guys but I think they made a step into hardcore way (but totally not a negative). Check your Grind resembles a large industrial mincer in which you slowly put your head down, hahaha! 

You are wrong if you think that I'll forget to mention this amusing cover :). It`s a great idea and excellent performance, I guess that even Beastie Boys would appreciate this joke.

Grid – Umeå Grindcore (Spela Snabbare Records / Discouraged Records)

If a band disbands there sure would be ten more bands to spawn like a 1:10 ratio but it'd be hard to pick an interesting one for obvious reasons. Swedish outfit named Grid appeared on the scene not too long ago (in the middle of 2014), guys already have a demo done on Discouraged Records in vynil variation. I have noticed long ago this nation does it in a quality way: grind, crust, pop (burning greetings to Abba :))... Umeå Grindcore is a one of a solid statement. Grid's music is a continuation of the Nasum legacy mixed with a crust punk. Check the "Fiction" tune to hear it yourself. Guys still have to master their recording skill, but they have already perfected the song-writing ability: it is a balance of groovy to fast patterns. Typical swedish guitar sound meets the firmest executed blast beats with d-beats meet two sore throats: that sounds so good, I recommend to spin the record since early morning. I have to highlight some good cover art which makes the release origin more noticeable (but is it a steam or drainage pipe? or a gun barell drowned in cement?) Outro sounds like there is a bugle which is pleasant too, like a top cherry on a cake.
