SOOM - Джєбарс (Robustfellow)
Sometimes, just sometimes, I feel the need for slow, hellish music. Sometimes, I just want to hear something that is viciously callous and devastating. Thankfully, noise-terrorists SOOM recently released their second album Джєбарс, to be honest I expect a lot from this
full length...
Chief of the Robustfellow label gave me this tape for review. I must say, I was really surprised with its looks and design. This is some truly nerdy stuff; the colors, the form, the way the whole hardcover connected - it's really something. All polygraphy was made in Ukraine but the tapes were made and recorded in the UK. The quality of this sound just paralyzed me, haha! To be honest, I've seen SOOM live about 5 times and and they touched me only once, at the really first time with old line up, that was a show in small dirty bar, but the atmosphere and sound were amazing. Unfortunately all next times when I saw them, they had no effect on me. But I really dig their first album and hopefully “Джєбарс” is cool too…
This albums begins with long, heavy and slow intro… the whole first song is just an intro. “Вщент” is the first thing with real riffs and suffocating sound. I do not know how this tape was recorded (maybe it was done with some help from demons or something) but it sounds monstrous - my speakers go crazy with all these vibrations. SOOM produce low hypnotic tunes that could scare you. This pleasant heaviness slowly envelops you and than crushes you. Most of these songs are full of classical sludge/doom/drone elements. But that doesn't mean that this noise is a clone of famous bands. These dope-smokers have their own way, with their own specific tunes and theme of ancient magical molphars (it's something like pagan wizards). I also found a lot of noise and psychedelic experiments on this piece, guys didn`t limit themselves in music creation and that is very best.
“Джєбарс” is that mix of confusion and joy that comes from saying, "What on earth is this?" then moving to "Whatever this is, it rules!"

Rubufaso Mukufo / Nervous Impulse / Epicrise
Wake up sleepy head, it's time for Grind! Today your silent morning will be crushed with this nice 3-way split. So let's find out what is hidden under this cheesy cover art...
It's so lovely to see that Rubufaso Mukufo is back! This is a new line up, new power, new sound and life for this band (at least I hope so). I can honestly say that these 11 songs are a good step in a direction to a new higher level. All the material has a better, more clean sound (with metal taste). The songs wreak of punk riffs and great guitar sound. These guys are using different approaches in vocal parties. There are “clean” roars, screams and parts where a pitch shifter was used. The mix of intensive drumming and clanking bass are creating sweet chaos. And all together that stuff sounds freaking groovy and invigorating!
I want to be honest, it was hard for me to find the right words for this band… because this unit has a mess of genres inside. Nervous Impulse is from Canada and their music is based on Brutal Death Meta. I got the impression that the guys can not decide what they want to play. In one moment Grind riffs turning in brutal tremolo with low breakdowns… Grind yelling turning in to some low fi guttural gurgling… These tracks have some good grind parts, but all these boring "brutal" things (with triggered drums) spoil the whole impression...
Unfortunately, the guys from Epicrise didn't record anything new in ages. These tracks were taken from their old demo “Dead Sea”. But in my opinion this is one of the best pieces of material from this band. A little bit raw sound with metal touch, good rhythmic pace and a ton of fun. Unfortunately the sound of the bass guitar is cluttered by the other instruments and that is a pity. One of the positive moments of this recording session is the strong vocals and smashing d-beats and blast beats. As a small bonus the guys added few nice covers of Dead Infection, Grossmember and Cerebral Turbulency. This atomic thing is full of fast guitars, crushing beats and punching energy, so what else do you need?)

Обрій - Олтар Утопії
Back in the 90's Death Metal was a pretty popular genre. I guess that time was a hayday for that kind of noise. Almost every countries had their own strong bands. Unfortunately my country could not boast of such things, until today. So we now have our hands on "Олтар Утопії " which is the first work made by Ukrainian band Обрій. These guys worked on these tunes for about 4 years and that was worth it. At first the guys just uploaded this EP on the internet, but who the hell cares about digital stuff? That's why Обрій has released this 4 song EP on their own on CDr (that is packed in simple digipack).
As soon as you hit that play button, “Олтар Утопії ” will cover you with a lovely and heavy sound wave. The sound is not perfect but nice, this is really good result for a debut release. I don't know why these guys did not want to use English... The roaring is in Ukrainian, and I believe that, that is pretty spicy for those who don't understand this language. For those who are interested, all their lyrics are about military conflicts and social topics. My favorite song is “Поля Камбоджі” (Fields of Cambodia). In this song the guys are covering the terrible tragedy of the Khmers (which were caused by totalitarian regime and utopian lies). Music of Обрій reminds me of a good mix of British and Swedish Death Metal roots. The guitars sound solid, the tone is great and its creating this thick and heavy base. The cooperation of bass and drums add to the atmosphere of the old school spirit. I will be dishonest if I say that everything on this record is perfect, there are a few prolonged moments (which are a little bit boring). I want to repeat myself as for the first work, everything is done well.

On this day, 4 long years ago Good Guys Go Grind was born. Lead by a man who's passion for reviewing and listening to music continues to drive him forward today. Zombies Eat My Neighbours - S/T (Surrogate rec)
This band has already existed more than 10 years… But unfortunately they've remained almost unknown outside of Ukraine. For these years this band has suffered a lot, like any other band they've had a lot of line-up changes and trouble with labels. But finally, this year small diy label Surrogate Recordsmreleased both of their albums on one tape. This tape looks very simple, as I know these guys tried to make it look like a pirate tape (bootleg cassette), well they managed to do that (i`m pretty sure that cover art is stolen from the internet, hahaha. So, boys and girls, let's take a closer look at the result of 4 years of work…
First is the “Nameless” album. We are expecting 11 songs and about 20 minutes of interesting experimental stuff. The main feature of “ZEMN” is that fact that these guys don’t stop on any genre. These boys are mixing everything with everything. First of all I must admit good quality sound (okay it`s not a grind sound but it sounds good). This album is full of catchy rhythms, dense guitar sound with pretty metal taste, but sounds heavy (sometimes it reminds me of the sound of different Polish grind/death metal bands). The lyrics side is full of social themes…dirty society, money, lost generation, shitty system, etc. But the weakest is the drum parts. Cut and paste style noticeably spoils the impression. Also there is a number of unnecessary samples, vocal effects and backing vocals. I can’t say that this album has grind base, rather it`s some hardcore+thrash with little grind. But anyway this album has some interesting songs, so it is worth listening to at least once.
Okay, now is the last album (for the moment of course) – “Alive”. Everything starts with a “Doom” song. I guess, with this song, guys tried to create a dark atmosphere in the beginning of the album, but this venture has failed. The guitar sound ruined it with its midi tone (and that is fucking sad). But, the next few songs show to us that not everything is lost. Dirty and raw sound masked guitar and everything starts to sound pretty good. One more thing this album is the most Grind stuff these boys have recorded. There are a good number of blast beats, heavy bass shots and crazy screaming. I can say with confidence that this material is much better (with material but not with sound) than their previous stuff.

VAVA – demo 2017 (Rotova Porojnina Records)
I got this tape from the Rotova Porojnina Records Cihef. This raw and short piece of noise was his first release. So let’s see what we got here. So if I understand everything right VAVA is a solo project from the drummer of Malad. First of all I must draw your attention to the fact that it is very primitive stuff. And I can say that after listening to this tape I remain a fan.
The art of this tape is pretty nice, this primitive picture reminds me of some old soviet cartoons. VAVA consists only of drums and screams. This 6 minutes were recorded in someones garage so everything here is very raw. All songs are short, fast and messy. I didn’t hear anything special but I like the drum reverberation. Some of the songs sound like quick shots some of them sound pretty stupid (crazy stupid yelling is not my favorite sorry). In general this release is very mediocre.
