Stheno / Facada - Primitive

This is hard but tasty dish... this barbaric meal spiced with hellish hot Greek and Brazilian sauces. Let`s start with this interesting and "primitive" design. The artist used a pretty cool idea, I think we can call this episode historical. I mean this act on this picture, when slave kills his master... this is cruel but full of justice. Also the artist used ancient rock carvings of animals, and this added brutality to the whole arts (that was really great idea).
From Greek land with 7 songs dehuman Stheno is coming ! This time this trio surprised me... their songs contain really many different genres and the sound is so hard and powerful. Okay mostly it`s death/grindcore but drops of black metal, crust and old hardcore punk made this record very rad. Fast grind drums bombardment and tight guitar riffs just crushing everything on their way... crust/punk parts make you swing... Some of these songs were recorded with the guests, here is the list of theme: Jim Politis/The Ghost Notes, James / Facada, Takafumi Matsubara / GridLink. Also I must notice good dark athmosphere whiсh is inherent in almost all the songs. And of course this badass G.B.H. cover... aarrghhh! This portion of hooligans noise can kick your ass, haha!
And now it's the turn for Brazilian savages from concrete jungle - Facada! Just like always these guys dont like to talk they just attack. Attack you with raw blasting and smashing grindcore. The whole sound is pretty dirty and raw but I like that... it`s no too bright but tight. Simple song structures are supplemented with unstopable muddy power and aggression. I especially love a punk stench which envelops all these blasts/d-beats, guitar riffs and roaring screams. By the way it is the shortest part on this CD it`s only 4 songs and about 4 minutes... and it`s pretty sad because these brazilian headhunters can rip your asses apart.

Stheno - Liberty Crawls In Waste (Everydayhate)

It happened so that I write a review on every release of this greek maniacs, one can say that I'm monitoring and describing every step of them, hehe))) After couple of splits and one EP it is clear that these guys should move forward. And it is absolutely predictable and logically that Polish label Everydayhate got its hands on their first long-playing album. So, what do we have here? Well, the guys wrote 13 songs for their first real baby (not bad). The first thing which your eye notices is the art which is beautiful in some way. It is very dark (especially the background with abandoned houses) but at the same time it has a type of elegance. The album itself starts with an interesting intro which multiplies the dark atmosphere of the artwork...Those sounds of chains, they make your flesh creep :). Just after the intro we hear fast, powerful and straightforward Stheno which is common for us. As I have mentioned earlier I'm familiar with all works of these guys so I can see which way their music is going with time. On the album Liberty Crawls In Waste I could mark that the guys have added more metal to their sound, they came back to their black metal basis. Grindcore is present here too but it isn't dominating, while the spirit of crust left their music almost completely. The work has very solid sound, everything is at a high level (as for me I prefer raw stinky sound, but for Stheno the "clear" sound is proper). All songs are connected with each other by one hardly prominent thread which makes this album very conceptual, I think.

Stheno/World Downfall (EveryDayHate)

Wow, what a grim cover (but with some certain elegance)! It is very suitable for this split, since topics that are addressed in the songs are full of darkness too. The first band on the split is a German team named World Downfall (not to be confused with the Japanese team that has same name). There is not much of a material, 2 tracks in total... But the first song helps forget this disappointment. Guys just knocked the listener off his feet with their sharp start. It’s a very cheerful metalized grindcore, with a good dense sound. With their music, they remind me of the old German tank called Tiger, which goes at full cruising speed. Speaking of the Nazis, the second track guys devoted to this topic, and it is called "Nazi Crap", I think that the name speaks for itself. But again, once you finish listening to the side - you understand that it is not enough))) I have been familiar with the Greek band Stheno for quite some time now. This is their third release, the guys do not release stuff too often, but once a year they steadily deliver something good)) After I listened to their side, I realized that they are gradually building up power as well as move entirely from black metal. But the tracks now include a lot of thrash riffs, it can be heard especially at the beginning of "Cluttered with blood". But I can assure you that it does not spoil anything, it just adds diversity. Songs of the Greeks are full of anger. Also, in these songs Stheno will explain to you why fanaticism is such a bad thing.

Stheno & Grassroll

Apparently, Greece is not only about myths and legends, but also about cool grindcore bands! I was very interested in this split and I was really looking forward to it. Mostly because I was interested in Stheno's stuff on this split. And, well, I can't say that I'm disappointed, but I got used to the fact that Greek musicians always make awesome and stylish arts (even on grindcore releases), but here we can see "usual" crust-art with a lot of "war things", destruction and humanity's being crippled. But, as we all know, don't judge the book by its cover.
I should note the intro here, which starts very unique (I can hardly remember where I've heard something like that). First you'll hear woman's singing (if you remember Gregorian, here is the similar thing), but then this sweet melody is being ripped of by machine gun and then Stheno takes over the show.
I listened to their first EP (which was very much black metal influenced) and here on this split we can hear somewhat different material. There's a lot less black metal in their music and more like crust-punk. Also you know how a lot of crust bands with weak slimsy sound, but here the sound is very solid and crushing. More metallic sound adds up to the heaviness and brutality of their songs.
Grassroll is a band I've never heard of until today. I browsed the Internet and found out that there's a girl on vocals with pretty harsh voice, but firstly I thought there's surely a man screaming in these songs. But compared to their compatriots Stheno they have more punk-directed sound. But I can't really say there is all-classic crust, 'cause, you know, Greeks like experiments, hehe. On par with crust riffs, they use a lot of hardcore riffs, which adds up to the overall sound and style.
I think this split is pretty good, maybe it's because there's 8 songs, and if you didn't know already, 8 is a lucky number in Japan)

Stheno ‎– Damnation Is Forever

Good Guys Go Grind continues its adventure into the deepest parts of Greek mythology, booze and grindcore bands :) Today we’re listening to the first release of young Greek band Stheno.
These guys decided to start off with vinyl EP (of course, it’s very popular nowadays, but still, right off the bat with vinyl, that’s pretty rare). And the name of this release is Damnation is Forever! It was supported by Scull Crasher label (also from Greece), alongside with three other labels.
One noticeable feature about Greek scene is black metal influences and attention to great art covers. Sometimes I wonder if there’s a whole organization of artists and designers who create for Greek bands.
On the cover we can see Medusa’s head, well, on the first look, but turns out it’s a head of her sister – Stheno. Guys from the band really knocked it out with inner parts of this release telling us about this creature with snake hairs, so there’s really no point wondering about it since it’s all been explained already by the band itself.
Anyway, let’s move on to the music, obviously. 5 tracks full of metallic grindcore / crust, sometimes they have some black metal parts and samples from different movies, and that is, I should note, is a very good way to keep your music fresh and interesting. While listening to these 5 tracks I immediately imagine battle of the old gods from the Olympic, don’t know why, but it’s just happening to me.
Good Guys Go Grind will remember Stheno and we will look forward to their new stuff they’ll come up with.
