Sram / Archagathus

Mince on my friends! This day I want to dedicate to one very popular Grind sub genre. Today I want to write something about Mincecore. As you all well know, this genre was created by big and old guys from Agathocles, but it has been 30 years already and Mincecore is still popular (at least I think so, hahaha). There is a lot of good bands nowadays and also a ton of nasty releases. Well I chose this split because I want to compare two mince bands from the different corners of our stupid planet. So here is nice friendly noise fight between Sram (from Moscow,Russia) and Archagathus (Manitoba,Canada). I think the best way to describe Sram, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the band, is to put it like this. Imagine a bear who is suffering from a hangover and who is looking for some nice cold beer. That thing is angry, really angry, his head is going to blow up and he is roaring and smashing everything in his way. As you may understand this record is pretty wild… This band doesn't sound like another AG clone, and that is beautiful. As for the sound, it's a little bit dirty and floppy… But the whole material is really interesting. If you will listen closely you will hear some tiny tunes from old grind/death times. The vocalist acting without any pichshifters, these screams are “real” haha, and yes that is a big plus for this band. But we can't forget about this angry buzzing guitar and nice drums beats (which are pretty groovy). PS: the cover art was made by Alexander, he is the drummer in Sram. I guess there are no freaks who don't know Archagathus but for these who`s dont… Archagathus is some kind of dirty Sasquatch who lives in deep Canadian forests and yes that creature loves cats and beer, haha! These bastards have a lot of splits and other releases, they've done a lot of shows and it's logical that, with the years, their music will change. First of all the whole sound became more lower and it's become more gorey. Also, now Dan uses more pitchshifted vocals. With these changes this “new” Archagathus sounds more interesting and more aggressive. But there is still a lot of groovy, goofy moments which are so catchy and will make you swing. Also all tracks were recorded by only Dan (pretty talented guy isn't he?) and these 6 songs are impossible to turn off! Rating: Sram 7.5/10 Archagathus 8.5/10

Sram / Abortion

And one more grind split turned up on my turntable. So this time I`ll be listening to so noise from old dinosaurs Abortion (Slovakia) and young mincers from Sram (Russia). At first glance, this split attracts attention with its appearance. This collage is very unusual, stupid and great, isn it? All the pictures are cut from old Russian magazines about UFOs and other bullshit. I guess that’s why this stuff looks so rad, haha. Okay, hmm, let's choose a side with which we'll begin. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, and first will be the Sram side. Well from the very first notes you understand that ugly and dirty mincecore awaits you. Honestly, that sound quality is pretty muffled, but in general the material is good. Harsh yelling vocal, rusty buzzing guitar and ringing drums beats. All this plus a ton of fun, swing rhythms and simple but good riffs. So that how russians plays mince, ha!) Okay, now lets check the second side. Here are 6 songs from one of the oldest Slovakian grind bands. Hm… how interesting, everything starts and ends with some church music (dark atmospheric choral singing). But then the grind from Abortion kicks in hard. Their style of grindcore mixes in some death metal influences in the old school way. I mean it`s not too fast and brutal. You will hear a lot of middle tempos with heavy guitar tone accompanied by hoarse roars. It is difficult to call this noise "original" but the most original thing here is a cowbell (I don’t know why but this device rarely used for the grind). Rating: 7.5/10 Sram fb Abortion fb

Baixo Calão/SRAM

Do you like some scary radioactive monsters? No? Well, the drummer of a band called Sram from Moscow really loves them. That's why he created that terrible two-headed creature that is having tasty lunch made of some poor crust punk fan.
Brazilians Baixo Calão, well, 2 years ago we did not know anything about them, but a European tour and a show at Obscene Extreme (OEF 2014) improved the situation pretty much. Today I want to review their work done together with the russian Sram. Brazilian headhunters recorded 4 tracks of some wonderful music in the studio. The material is not beautiful with its speed or ultra perfect sound quality (as in e.g. Swedish grindcore bands), but is a great mid-tempo grindcore with some raw soul. There just as much rawness in the sound as it should be; the sound is just a perfect hit for such a release. Brazilian side is only 5 minutes long, but in that 5 minutes you get a lot of fun listening to the terrible screams of vocalist mixed with sawing and slashing guitars sound.
Mince-mania finally reached Russia. Moskow guys describe the problems of homeless men, the horrors and consequences of drug absorption. And they were not too lazy to add a cover of cult americans Autopsy to their side! It's hard to tell what the music of these guys is like... there are some classic Agathoclish mince pieces, and something completely of their own identity. It all sounds very cheerful! Sometimes it sounds too much raw and guitar gets very blurry. But this is mincecore, what else can you expect? Those dudes really deserve some of your attention!

Subcut / Sram

To tell you the truth, even the fact of releasing this split was a huge surprise for me. Not only because one of the few post-Soviet mincegrind band made some new material, but also because there’s very old and famous Brazilian grindcore band Subcut is also on this split!
First band on this split is a Brazilian one. Now I have to start with telling you how good their artwork is. Yeah, you’re right, nothing new here, but it’s grindcore, it’s how it should be. It depicts the most current themes of evil that humanity brings upon itself, like war, repression, innocent victims, and of course the nuclear explosion on the background. Unfortunately, there’s only 3 tracks, and the third one is a Napalm Death cover, but I guess we have to be content with what we have. The sound here is pretty good, a bit raw and somehow metal, but overall I enjoyed it. Especially I liked the diverse vocals that adds up to the aggression. And, to put it simply, we got a great example of Brazilian grindcore :)
Next one is a Moscow band Sram. Until this release they were famous by their splits with Hyperemesis, Baixo Calão, Paucities, Laserguys. These Russian guys came up with a pretty interesting artwork. “Punitive psychiatry” is the name of the cover. It depicts some poor guy being dragged by two large paramedics into the depths of psychiatry’s hell. I would like to note that the artist who made this is an ongoing artist for Internal Damage releases Jon (also the member of Terminator 666, and yes, he’s the one who made a banner for our zine :)) Sram didn’t make any covers and presented 4 their own tracks. Overall, their side is very vigorous and high-quality (they’ve really grown as a musicians). They mix grindcore and mincecore in their music, and as a result we can hear both fast blasting parts and some mincecore dancing groove. A bit pitch shifted vocals only adds up the fire in a whole thing. My favorite track on this is “Schizofrenicheskoje Slaboumije", really rad song.

Sram (20.12.13)

Hi, Vanya! How're you doin', fed a bear already?)

Hey! I dont feed bears i eat bears. Eat bears and drink beers! Ugh! I am also having toothache right now and it's fucking annoying.

I think it would be worth to tell our readers about a band itself, how it all started and what's going on with SRAM nowadays?

First we've been jamming some sorta noise rock with our first drummer but after visiting obscene extreme we've decided that noise rock is stupid. We've realised that the only real music should be based on blastbeats, dbeats, illegible vocals and also on weed and alcohol. I mean we knew that before but obscene had just reminded us of it. So we made a band and started doing raw mincing grindcore. Later we had to part ways with the drummer after recording for split with PAUCITIES but we've quickly found a replacement in the person of our good mate Los. He made the band slightly less shitty.
