One Day In Fukushima - Ozymandias

I remember the day when this band released their first raw demo - it was not the best piece of grind on this old planet, but back then I thought that they had potential and if they tried their best they could create something really good. Well I was right - this Ozymandias album is the best thing that I have heard from these Italian freaks. As far as I know there is a tape version too, but I only have the CD which was released by Ukrainian Eclectic prod. The design of this first full length is weird...when I looked at this image my first thought was "is this a new album from Blue Öyster Cult or other hard rock legends?". The band logo has a new look too, I think it's done in an Asian style or something like that. It's hard to believe that grindcore is hidden behind this image of broken Egypt statues. Nevertheless, we have here 18 tracks of fast grindcore with a bit of a metal taste. The visual side was unusual and it surprised me, but let's check the noise and hope there will be something extraordinary. There is no special intro or movie sample; these guys fire up everything with massive grinding riffs. The guitar has a good buzzing tone; a bit modern for my taste but nice. One Day In Fukushima uses 2 types of vocals, classical grindcore and high screaming. As for the bass sound, it's mostly cluttered with other instruments (but you may clearly hear it in Giù La Testa). Blast parts are not deadly fast, but they fit perfectly here (by the wa,y here you will hear real drums, not a drum machine like on previous records). During the listening, I caught a lot of influences from hardcore and some parts from Napalm Death. For the end I left the hardest and unpleasant part. When you write review you should be honest, whether you want to or not. I started to feel a bit bored near the end of this album, but I'm sure it's mostly about the sound. These guys compressed it, in my opinion that killed the main mood and cut off most of the energy of Ozymandias. Rating: 7/10 One Day In Fukushima fb

Rabid Dogs - Italian Mysteries (Eclectic Productions)

Okay boys and girls, do you like detective movies? Yes? Lovely! Then you will like this album! It has been passed 5 years since their last CD “The Octopus” and now our Italian friends are back with a new album! I can honestly say that this recording is a logical evolution of this strange band. These guys managed to surprise me, haha! These songs and sound are so unusual for a Grind band. You wont hear classical grindcore here, you won't find super, evil, nuclear blast beats or distorted vocals… BUT this album is very interesting in its own way. Everything here is soaked with the spirit of old Italian movies, starting with the cover. The artist drew so many different characters in this picture… shit… and all together they form a skull. Hm, I must admit, that is an interesting and pretty fresh idea, for a grind release, of course. (Part 1 - the visual side). (Part 2 - noise). As I said before our friends have found a new way. Their music has changed a bit and now I can tell that they are “real rockers”, haha! Italian Mysteries is full of fuzz and good groovy energy. The guys didn't change the Grind base but, now they`ve added more rock'n'roll and stoner riffs! Also the whole sound has changed, now it sounds more clear (theh managed to jump to the next level and that is lovely!). The guitar sound changed into some kind of buzzing creature with lots of fun riffs. Also, I can't avoid mentioning his here they mix things up a ton with instruments like harmonica and piano (there were a few moments in the songs where these instruments created a damn good atmosphere). So if you`re open for some music experimentation, you would love this album. Oh almost forgot the “Italian Mysteries” could be a great choice for your beach party! Zombie Assault – Video Nasty (Eclectic Productions)

So guys we got a debut today! New band, new purulent acne on Canadian skin? ha!) But I hasten to assure you, despite a new name the guys which play in Zombie Assault have a robust experience. For example, the rhythm sections of Putrescence (R.I.P.) involved into this project. Okay, I think this design is not so great and also not impressive. BUT! You will definitely love this nice, rotten stuffing of this CD. You will have a 40-minute immersion into the dungeon to the living dead, haha!

The Video Nasty stands out with a good cheerful and frisky rhythms. Guys made a great work, they made a great mix between old death metal and crust punk. One of the best here is the dense guitar sound, powerfull roaring vocals sound nice too. And lets not to forget about indestructible rhythm section (by the way the bass guitar sound here is really lovely). I can say that sound master was able to make a sound ala "from the grave", personally I did not feel the larvae crawling over me, but anyway this sound is very good. Dan Ryckman (Archagathus, Skunk and others) was in charge of that. The album is full of heavy energy which fills you up while listening. I surely believe that these sounds are great for raising you from the dead after strong yesterday's booze, haha!)

Putrescence - Voiding Upon the Pulverized

Ha, I did not expect it's been 4 years (or maybe even more?) since that day when Putrescence was in studio for the last time. Although it’s been a pretty long time, guys didn’t lose their might, Voiding Upon the Pulverized is the real deal! But we’ve got a bad news too... this album is the last one in their nasty history. These guys put a fat full point at the end of Putrescence way. By the way this album has a very posh design. This theme might be trite but it’s performed very well, with great quality. All this dump of human remains and workers that dump rotting stuff in a heap... Uhhh, it looks very strong and I hope that many of you will get sick because of this picture, haha!

Canadian butchers stick to their favorite theme of disrupted bodies, pestilence and etc. Each of 11 songs on this album is crammed with these cheerful things, he) For some of you, Putrescence may seem trivial and dull but I really like the way they skillfully mixed death metal with goregrind. The whole album is impregnated with heavy atmosphere and low and dense sound, and that makes this album sound like an old paver that is slowly pressing down the corpses :) There are no ultra-speeds or ultra-low distorted roars (if you want something like that you can always turn on LDOH) All fans of the old goregrind and death metal will definitely enjoy this album. Once one is done listening to mid-tempo rhythms and sawing guitars, everything that will remain of their brains is gonna be a bunch of chopped rotten pieces!

Rabid Dogs – The Octopus (Eclectic Productions)

This italian bunch have always amused me. They‘re music is quite unordinary. Safe to say, their signature sound is based on the scent of vintage Italian crime films in the atmosphere of their music. Yet their latest release bares a strong sense of concept and is dedicated to a good old film series (which came to my attention when I was a young kid). The motive of this film echoes not only in the sound itself, but in the artwork design. And it looks pretty cool as well. It‘s been too long since I‘ve gotten such a treat from the esthetics of a mere digipack. By the way, the disk itself has pit-art emblemed on the readable part of the CD. This makes the visual part of the album even more impactful. What needs to be mentioned is that it‘s hardly a mini-album. There are only five tracks on this release (plus a bonus track which is not mentioned in the track list, making it a very pleasant surprise), yet the quality of it barely makes it an issue. This EP in no way resembles straight-foward grind. This time the guys did not hesitate to go full experimental. Grind meets rock ‘n roll. It was suprising to hear a synth in the last two tracks. A synth and something distant of stoner/doom rock elements. But they still pull off the synth element in a pleasant manner. Even if this release goes full experimental and may sound somewhat weird, it still sounds really soild. I would recommend this one to anyone who is looking for a breath of fresh air in the scene.
P.S. to clarify, the dialogues between songs are from the mentioned TV series.
