Doom (30.05.15)

Hi! Thank you so much for your time doing this interview! What's news? Chillin' after another gig?

Stick; got back of a mini tour of Europe, which was a blast. I enjoy the "old school" jump in a van & go tours to all the shit with airports

Corrupt Fucking System was released couple years ago and it's a great album to show everybody that good ol' bands are still in the game! As far as I know you recorded, produced it and even released it all by yourself... It's pretty hard to find this kind of 100 % DIY these days :) Was it hard to do everything by yourself? Also we would like to know if Doom plans something new for us?

It was the end of a long process. We always wanted to have total control of our music, or as much as is possible. We have never been 100% happy working with other labels in the past, so we got the money together, we are in the lucky position that people are aware we are active. We have access to a studio & Bri can do the recording. It all made sense to do it ourselves. It has been hard work packaging them up & dealing with distro/ people but it has a certain satisfaction to it.
We are putting the final touches to a 5 track ep. It will be called "consumed to death" The download of it will be out first & all the money from the download will go to the victims families of the Chile gig/disaster. (so don't upload/download for free please as the money is for a benefit) There will be a vinyl version later on...

I understand that this question might be unpleasant for you, but still, when I heard about tragedy in Chile's club I couldn't believe it... Could you tell us what exactly happened overall (for those readers who don't know yet). I remember you were collecting money in order to help those who needed it in this situation.

We are doing some gigs, collecting money to go to the families affected. It is a complicated process as people are being decietful & after all this, people are trying to rip the money off. Basically, people (about 80) didn't want to pay to get in & stormed the doors of the venue. (human avalance) people were trapped in the crowd or crushed under an iron gate that collapsed , people died because some people wanted to get in for free. It is a very sad situation, & these people are still doing it.

Aside this accident in Chile, let's talk about your tour. How was Brazil for you? What new discoveries you made? What can you say about bands which were on one stage with you?

It was good to meet people, thats what touring means to me but a few days before it was my mothers funeral & a few days into ther tour I recieved a call saying my father died, so with the Chile incident, it was a hard tour for me, that & all i seemed to see of SA was through a sheet of glass, too much travelling.

You traveled a lot, performed a lot, seen a lot... Tell us, what country has the most sincere punk scene?

I honestly couldnt say one is more or less than another. A scene is made of individuals, so i would have to know everyone personally to make that kind of judgement.

As we all can see, humanity has no borders in insanity. Looking to what happens with the world, I start to think that we're coming to our end. It's like people forgot why they need brain in the first place? Don't you agree?

Its definatly a struggle for people to do the right thing & win against the people who seem intent to destroy everything, but we need to fight on, what else can we do with good concience.

Doom has come a long way full of trials and tribulations. Maybe this question might be a bit quirky, but what is Doom for you?

its been a big part of my life journey, its a vehicle to have my say, a way of meeting people, travelling the world & a lot more. It's my contribution to the big family we call 'Punk'

How's your label Black Cloud Records doing? If I remember it correctly, you released only your music there. What happens with him now?

Im just waiting to release the vinyl of the new 7", still selling the last of the CFS lps & cds.

Would it be right for me if I compare religion and nazism? 'Cause if you look through the history and nowadays activity of religious fanatics, it's hard to not to compare it with nazism and other total control systems.

Religion is definatly a form of control & people seem to be able to interpret anything they read in their religious books to suit whatever they want to do. Tho shall not kill, how can that be changed to kill anyone who doesnt agree with me. Religion is another way people can find to alienate other people from themselves to discriminate against them. My God wears a red hat, your God wears a blue one, lets kill everyone over it.... madness.

I think many people would find it interesting to know if there's some way to call Doom to do a live show in another country. So, do you have any conditions that you would agree for performing in other country?

Well, we need expenses for travel, food & beer & maybe some money for the time we spend away (usually away from jobs that pay the bills) Best to write & ask a specific question. We dont always get paid, we do benefits we belive in, write to ukdoom@gmail.com

A lot of bands make covers on your song, you know that. All those covers on Police Bastard is enough for a whole tribute, hehe) How does it feel to know that other bands remember you and your songs and play them?

It's very flattering, but I find it strange. I don't think of mysel;f above other bands/ people, so find it hard when people treat me like a rock star, then get offended when I don't want to act like one.

This one may be a bit generic, but still, today punk is becoming more like McDonald's... It's "trendy" to be punk. What do you think about this?

Punk is more an attitude, something in your head, so you cant just buy that. Its usually easy to spot the fakers

It's only natural to play music that you like. But sometimes it's not enough to make some money for a living. So here's the question: what Doom members do for a living?

We all have jobs, like you say, we could not live off our music, we are not mainstream enough. I never wanted to live off my music as i feel i would have to comprimise certain things to make money. Instead i do labouring jobs on building sites or work at a theatre. Bri is a technician at a music college. Denis runs his own Tattoo shop.

Why is it so rare to see women in punk (I mean playing in bands)?

You would need to ask them, I see a lot of women in punk.

Could you tell our readers more detailed about what DIY culture/lifestyle is for you?

Do it yourself. Don't moan there is no band/ gig/ march/ whatever, do it yourself I think you have to do a lot of stuff for the love of the subject, not for how much money it will make. It's done (usually) with a passion not an expectance of financial gain. It can be very rewarding, but not guarenteed
