Facada (11.02.15)

Hi, guys! I’m very glad that you found some time for my blog! And first question is: do you still have cannibals in your jungles?

It’s nice to answer these questions! Well, Brazil is a huge country so, not only in the jungles but there are cannibals in the cities as well. One of our songs (Corumba, Hippie do Inferno) is a bout a cannibal. If you’re talking about the native brazilian cannibals, I think there may be  a handful in some subterranean villages in the middle of the jungle. But as a good friend of mine says: most of the cannibals were already eaten by the white men.

I think that your last album was very successful. 2 different formats, CD and vinyl, did you get a good feedback from the fans?
And my favorite rubric “excruciating question about tapes”, hehehe, do you plan to release it on tapes?)

I Think grind bands have no fans, but fellow people that share the same ideas. They are friends that like the (anti) music that we play, just as we enjoy the other bands. It’s very nice and humbling to share or ideas and influences with people that enjoy what we do all over the world. Our last album had a very good response around the world. Even that the lyrics are in portuguese we were able to cross that language barrier and make ourselves understood. It was released in Europe (EveryDayHate Recs.), USA (Nerve Altar) and in Brazil (Black Hole in CD and Laja in Vinyl). The distribution was very good and the response to it has been very pleasing for us. I think it would be a blast to have one of our albums released in tape, but we have never had the opportunity to do so. If someone is interested in doing it, drop us a line and we can work it out. Oh, by the way, our demo was released in Indonesia by one of our friends but he has never sent us a copy.

You have 3 full-lengths, huge live shows experience and some fame. Have you ever get an offer to go on tour in Europe or in America?

We have already received some invitations to play in Europe ( We almost played in Obscene Extreme) and South America, but not yet in the US. We would love to go, but the plane tickets are really expensive and we need some serious planning to do it (Money and time). We have a lot of contacts and friends and the fact that one of our guitar players live in Germany helps us a lot. If some crazy guy decides to pay for our tickets we would go there in the blink of an eye.

Listening to your songs I found myself thinking that you guys are big fans of Napalm Death (correct me if I’m wrong). How long are you into this kind of music? What was the first Napalm Death album you listened?)

Everyone in the band is a huge fan of napalm death in almost all of its phases. Besides that we all listen to all types of extreme music (death, grindcore, thrash, noisecore, crust, hardcore…). Napalm Death is one of our biggest influences in the musical and lyrical aspect, especially Lee Dorrian’s early lyrics. And besides this being like an old influence, Napalm is the kind of band that has aged well in a very cool and original way. They have written classics and have their names set in stone forever as one of the all time greats. I believe not even the guys themselves can figure out the importance of their work to many people. The first album of them that I checked out was From Enslavement to Obliteration. Even to this day I have goosebumps listening to it. It’s so brutal that it’s scary. Perfect from back to back.

Danyel (guitar): Utopia Banished
Dangelo (drums): Scum

What do you think about weird merchandize, like cups, pants, condoms, food and all that stuff? Do you agree that this is a bit “poser stuff”?

If one of those things have something that is really special or has some kind of sense, why not? But many bands today make it as a gimmick to see unnecessary things that have little to do with the band just for an easy buck. I see this happening much more in the metal scene that flirts a lot with this commercial side like a mini mainstream. For bands that have no history whatsoever this kind of souvenir is ridiculous. If the band is already sedimented, has a name and eventually need to use these objects as a way to make a living, I see no problem. But for underground bands I think this is really incoherent and naive.

I think that almost every band has 2 main problems: drummers and labels. Sometimes it’s very hard to find both. How’s it going with labels that release Facada, is the situation getting better year after year?

I have to agree with half part of your statement. With Facada we have never had any sort of problems with any of the labels that have worked with us. The relation is good and always improving. With every single one of our releases we’ve always had pretty decent distribution by people that have always believed in us and gave some awesome support over the years. I can’t even recall a single situation that we’ve had problems, except for the occasional deadline problems. All the labels that work with us are super professional, caring and do things with absolute quality. We have a nice relation with all of our labels. We trust them and I believe they trust us. Now… Drummers… Who hasn’t had problems with these complicated people? lol. Our drummer was out for a whole year but now he is back.

What about writing songs? Someone from your band writes a song and the others helps with amendments, or every band member takes part in creating process?

Our process is as chaotic and crazy as it gets. We have a guitar player (Ari) that lives in Germany and makes some songs in there. From time to time, when he comes to Brazil, he rehearses with our drummer and makes the last touch ups in the compositions. After that they record the drums to register it. Later on he records his guitar parts in Germany. Meanwhile me (James) and Danyel make soeme other songs and record our parts here. I make the vocal lines and record all of them at once. The bass parts we usually share. After everything is recorded, at least in these last 2 albums, we send it to William Blackmon (Gadget) to mix and master it in Sweden. It’s weird but works out fine. We would love to have the opportunity to practice  and compose all together all the time. Maybe one day. The for of us are really active in the process, but the lyrics are My and Ari’s responsibility.

2014 is over, so the question here is pretty obvious: what album in 2014 you liked the most? (style of music doesn’t matter)

This is so fucking hard and humanly impossible to answer. Only one album of 2014 is really difficult to pick. And maybe I only get the chance to listen to an 82 album in 2014 so it doesn’t work for me. Anyway, I’m going to list some of my favorites:
Cotton Candy Rendevouz (Omfalos), Mens Animus Corpus (Selim Lemouchi and his enemies), Sister (In Solitude), Codemned to System (Nausea), Mental Hygiene (Internal Rot), Electroconvulsive Blast Orgy (Raw Noise Apes), Scenarios of Brutality (Violator), Seculo Sinistro (RDP), Mr. Crack (Terror Revolucionario), Satanic Holocaust (Godtoth), Monge (Demo), Otomanos (test/DER), Wargasm for the comtepthrone (Lustfer), Legados do Inframundo (Miasthenia).

Last year was pretty hard because of a war conflict in my country and intensification of radical muslims. What can you say about all this terror?

Living this kind of reality is very traumatic and sometimes makes us wonder how limited and stupid the human being really is. They are no able to live in peace so they always crave for conflict, power, pride and religion. I know that much of the involvement of the Muslim (and the other side as well) have a very political connotation to it. And it makes everything much more cruel and stingy. In every place we are vulnerable to this kind of actions. here in brazil, the streets are really dangerous. It;s almost like a civil war between the police and the criminals and we don;t know who is right. Terrorism pretends to be a weapon tonsure the popular demands and has a mission of holiness and honor, but we don’t really know the reasons behind it.

As I mentioned here, you have 3 full-length albums, but you don’t have any splits. Why is that?

Since we started the band we always tried to make tons of split with thousands of bands but none of them worked. It takes some time and planning to make everything it its right place. But is not because we don’t want it. This year we writing songs for 2 splits: one with Hutt (Criminal Attrack Records) and another with Expurgo (Black Hole), then maybe we can break this curse.

What thoughts do you have during a heavy hangover?)

Oh fuck, what a terrible hangover. I shouldn’t have drunk so much. Let me see how much I spent. I want a glass of water and a Tylenol. I’m not gonna leave today. Did I fuck up yesterday? I should have left earlier….

There is adage: “Everything is transitory, only music is eternal”. What do you think about that?

I think so. Music is able to reach feelings and sensations that can outlive any of us and make you realize the power of it. Create images and thoughts that are nearly impossible to be explained. It;s something beyond flesh and bones that die with time. It’s something more abstract, closer to the trees, the air, the nature…

Very generic, but still very important question: what do you have up your sleeves for your fans in the future?

This first semester we’re gonna work hard in the studio. We have 18 songs for those splits and we’re going to record 8 songs for a cover album or a 7”. Our first is going to be re-released via Peculio discos with our demo as a bonus and O Joio is going to be re-released via Gallery Prod, Cut Throat and some more. And in march we’re play with the almighty Obituary in our hometown. It’s going to be fantastic.

Do you have some stories/fables about Amazonian places, maybe something mystical?

Amazon is enormous and it surpasses the brazilian borders. In the margin of the rivers there are some giant snakes, dolphins that turn into people at night, all female tribes, devils in the woods (like Votu), weird animals, UFOs, and psychoactive drugs. The culture in there is rich and fabulous.

That’s all, folks, thank you for this interview! A couple of words for our readers, please.

Thanks for the interview. I really like those different questions. Thanks to everybody and look for facadanagoela in the interwebs… Keep grinding!
Ps: I would like to thank Ze Misanthrope for the translation.
