Baixo Сalao (16.03.14)

Hi there! How's the weather in sunny Brazil? That cyclone, that froze USA, didn't get to you?)

Hi , Bro ! Here we see the only Cyclone is the corruption cyclone.

I was suprised when I first saw your vocalist Leandro. And I really respect this guy, despite his physical condition he still rocks on the scene. How he ended up un Baixo Calao?

Some people still are surprised by this, however , the band does not revolve around it. He is the founder of the band , it was he who started the band and named the band, and me and he are the only member of the first training.

William, drummers were always like hot cakes and they are always playing in a bunch of different bands. So tell us, in what else band do you play?)

It is true , drummer life is hard ! I went through several bands , however , the ones that I'm playing for a long time is the Baixo calao, and WARPATH band (Thrash Metal ).

In 2012 Baixo Calao did a tour in Europe. What was the most memorable thing or things there? Was there any difficulties (as far as I know, you are the only english-speaking guy in the band)? Maybe you do have some plans to visit good ol' Europe again, and maybe even post-USSR countries (like Ukraine or Russia etc)?

Trouble on tour , I guarantee you were much smaller than I was expecting , and the fact that we were good welcomed everywhere we played decreased further difficulties . Of course the fact that few of us speak English, disturbs a little, but the fellowship within the underground surpasses it... just open a beer together and the language is universal. If I mention something memorable this tour , I'll have to write much here , but we ( the band ) citing something memorable reduce our participation in OEF . About plans to visit Europe again is always in our master plan , and next time we want to go new places, such as russia, personally meet distant friends, as Ivan the Sram. But that this return happens we need to put things in order so that everything happens according to plan.

Band exists for a long time (since 1996!), but first album was released only in 2008. What was the reason for such delay?

Yes, the band exists since 1996, but our first EP was released in 2003 (HOMO Postumus), with 6 tracks. The delay releasing anything, it was because we were not worrying too much about it.We we were junkies. But in 2003, after some changes of members, the band decided to record.

No matter how I tried, I couldn't find comprehensible info about your band. So, I think it's time for you to tell us some of the band's biography)

You were not the first to have such difficulty getting information about the band . However , below is a summary of: Baixo Calao , the band formed in 1996 in Belem, had members : Leandro Porcko ( vocals) , Dick ( bass ) , Leo ( guitar ) and Barbosa (drums ) playing the HardCore style . With the entry of new drummer William Gomes , the band entered the Grindcore and with this change comes the guitarist Vinicius , and thus the Grind style was present . Only in 2003 released their first EP - Homo Postumus , then adds one more member , Beto Core ( vocals) to make the guttural vocals. in 2005 release Demo - Repudio & Descrenca ( rejection and disbelief ) . In 2006 , participating in the collection " Desgracacore " (2005 ) and collected " Burning the Cross " (2006 ). Moreover , in 2008 , the band released their Debut album "Tu Crias" (You create) and in 2012 released their second album , "Atmo Mediokra" which served as a springboard for a European tour !
And after tour in 2013 , the band recorded their first LP - Split : Baixo Calao / Mururoa(CZ) . And now awaiting the release of yet another split , which will be released in Russia , along with friends of the band SRAM.

What was the emotions that overwhelmed you when you took your first album in your hands?

When I had on hand the first LP I confess that at that moment , I realized that was worth all our effort since the band's inception. I am in this life for a long time , it's hard, but when we do out of love, all worth it, and be together guys that love, my bandmates are my brethren, and to see a our work done, as our first record, is incredible.

Brazil is well known by having not so many bands, but still great ones. But I'm sure your country has some dark horses that are pretty impressive. Tell us, please, about these obscure bands.

In Brazil there are many bands in various styles ( Death , Thrash , Black , Grind , Gore ), but many end up without opportunities or they give up along the way. I can name a few; Hutt, Slag, Obitto, Academic Worms, Vjolenza. among others.

Not much time has passed since the beginning of the year, and already your split with Russian band SRAM came out. Who was the initiator of this?) On what label it was released? Is it hard to make a good quality record in Brazil?

Who initiated the Split was Ivan ( SRAM band ) that came into contact with us after the tour , and as we were busy with the recording of our Split with Mururoa , he gave us more time to send the songs to splt with them . It was released by distros : NEOLITHIC PRODUCTIONS ( Russia ) ; HYPERION RECORDS ( Croatia ) ; DESTROY SOUNDS RECORDS ( Russia ) ; SACRIFICIAL TAPES ( Scotland ), NO BREAD RECORDS ( Russia ) and ACID REDUX PRODUCTIONS ( United state) . There is great difficulty in Brazil because the very small number of factories that produce vinyls , and because of that , the price to release a record on vinyl much beyond our conditions. in relation to the studios, we can do good things always recorded our albums with our friend kleber Chaar, and always liked the result, but these songs for the split with Sram, were left with a fucking great quality.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find your releases on european distro. Maybe I overlooked something? How did you distribute your records? All by yourself or by some local distros? Is there a chance to get something that was released? (I think this question bothers quite a lot of people)

Distros in our releases in Europe, only the Split with the Mururoa and Split with Sram because these two were the first releases we had with the distros out of Brazil . We only had support from distro , the 2012 release ( album : MEDIOKRA ABMT ) and this album was launched with the support of 3 distros , one of Sao Paulo ( HC - 80 ), two of our state ( dung Distro / Distro Rock ) . As for our previous materials , all were made and distributed only by us , totally DIY . Now, about getting our first materials , this time we only available cd - r ( TU CRIAS ) 2008 , for the first two ( HOMO Postumus / cd - r - 2003 / CONDEMNATION & UNBELIEF / cd - r - 2006 ) we are seeing the possibility of relaunching the first disc here in europe, will be more accessible. Our CDs are now available with the Rato Raro band in Spain, and EBC distro, In France.

Let the carnival begin!) This is an integral part of your culture. Magnitude of these holidays and their colorfulness have always seized me. And here is the question: did you make some gigs based on this carnival themes, with costumes, beer and all that stuff?))

Carnival is ONE of the cultures of Brazil, however, this culture does not represent me. At Carnival time, hardly happen undergrounds shows (at least in the State where I live), because by being a holiday of several days, many people take out of town, but still do gigs in opposition to this alienation of the people, while dancing at the carnival, politicians fuck the people. Now, for the beers are always welcome, no matter if you have holiday or not. hahaha!

Most of the countries have their own cuisine and drinks. Mexico is famous because of their tequila, Russia - vodka, and what alcohol do your country have?)

Brazil produces wine, produces beer, however, Cachaca ( a drink that can say that is a relative of Tequila and Vodka ) - Cachaca it's my favorite drink.

What political views Baixo Calao shares? Is grindcore for you "left/right" music, or "Go Fucking Nihilist"? Or maybe your position is "music beyond the politics"?

My opinion is that the information should first get the music . That is, many are excited about the music and forget to inquire about it , and thus the Fashion just feeding this error or lazy to seek this information . I say this because it is what I see regarding the grindcore style , which many think it comes down to grindcore / noise like yelling . And so , I think grindcore is a style that expresses ( musically & symbolically ) a transparent manner to indignation and dissatisfaction , political, historical and social global, ie an indignation that is not isolated only to the other events of a region or a country. grindcore sing the global human shit.

By the way, about the world in general. Do these words "world crisis, global control, oil wars" are familiar to you? What do you think about them?

The way to think " globally " this our century is totally different from the previous centuries . There is no way to separate a global crisis of a fact or a crisis in a region. Even though many people still think that a war on oil (which is happening in a distant country too ) does not influence the price of bread, globalization translates the legend of world facts . About this thought , we can quote a paragraph from Zygmunt Bauman , who tells us : " [ ... ] I think for the first time in the history of mankind self-interest and ethical principles of mutual respect and attention of all human beings in the same point direction and require the same strategy. Damn globalization may even turn into a blessing : a ' humanity ' has never had a better opportunity ! If this happens , the chance will be seized before it is lost , is , however, an open question . The answer depends on us . "

Thank you so much for this conversation, William! Do you have something to say to our readers afterwards?

Me and profanity appreciate the space, support and reporting! And we believe que in this way, our goals are strengthened. And we hope to be able to return to Europe with an even better tour! Health and long life to all!
